The Good:

IMG-5274.jpg

Bill Laurie back in the house...on the road, even. Could more NIL cheddar be along for the ride? We can hope.

That's it. That's the Good in its totality.

The Bad:

Literally everything else.

The effort? Poor.

Defensive execution? Severely lacking.

Offense? Offensive. For huge swaths of the game, Missouri simply did not run a coherent offense. Hero-Ball, mind-numbing sloppiness, and an overall seeming lack of interest in playing ball today in all facets.

Sometimes, shots aren't falling. Today was one of those days. But the answer is never...I repeat, NEVER to just back up until you're open and jack the first available shot you can. For brief glimpses, the offense looked like it's capable of running it. For the vast majority, it did not. And it got whacked as a result, by a mediocre team.

The Ugly:

Mississippi State is an average college basketball team. If Missouri has designs on playing for more than a trip to Madison Square Garden to conclude the season, this one needs to be put behind them. Just a terrible, disheartening outing.

Epilogue:

All that said, it's one game. Now flush twice, light a match (and maybe a scented candle) and get back to business on Tuesday. A home loss against Columbia Minora is wholly unacceptable.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE AT THE HALF

-You figured Tolu Smith was going to be a handful for Missouri. And he has been. But where he's hurt them the most is at the free throw line. Not only has he drawn four fouls this game, he's only missed one free throw despite shooting 54.8% from there this season. They haven't let Kobe guard him much, which was probably the smart move.

-MSU's defense has been as-advertised. Pick and rolls alone aren't going to get it done for Mizzou. That's why you're seeing DeAndre Gholston and Isiaih Mosley have good games so far -- both players can create shots one-on-one. It's also why the team is struggling when those two are out.

-As for why Sean East started in place of Mosley today, my best guess is that because Mississippi State generates a bunch of steals, Gates wanted his best two ball-handlers out there. But I think giving up that size hurt them on defense -- East is -7 in six minutes. Both teams have been ok taking care of the ball.

-I don't quite understand how Mizzou goes from being a 48% shooting team from deep to being a 10% shooting team. There has to be a middle ground. If two of their misses were makes (aka shooting 30%), this is a tie game.

-Not sure why Aidan Shaw hasn't played, but I thought Mabor Majak looked solid while he was out there!

Star "partnering" with Tribune for Mizzou coverage

That's probably behind a pay wall, but it doesn't tell you anything you didn't know if you listened to the post-game interviews with Coach Gates that Gabe has posted.

But what's interesting is the byline is a Tribune reporter and and the end of the story, it mentions the Star is partnering with the Tribune for Mizzou coverage. Maybe this has been going on all season and I didn't notice, or maybe the Star realizes now it has to cover Mizzou basketball.

The Star is a shell of its former self and has stooped to the point of posting stories on Twitter with sensational headlines as click bait--and 9 times out of 10 the story happened somewhere else. The Chiefs are the only reason they still have a print version.

BASKETBALL Who is the most improved player you can remember at Mizzou?

I was thinking about the leaps Kobe Brown has made since he's been here. Who are the most improved players from Mizzou history? I remember Matt Lawrence not looking like he was athletic enough to be on the floor. Then 4 years later he was a 1000pt scorer on an Elite Eight team. Who you got?

I have had Sprint and Google Fi which uses T-Mobile and US Cellular... Reception/bandwidth has varied between non-existent and garbage over the years at both Faurot and Mizzou Arena. What is the best carrier for service during an Mizzou sporting event?
