BASKETBALL POSTGAME THREAD: UCF

-Dennis Gates said he told the team at the first practice after the Kansas game he was going to change the starting lineup and that minutes were up for grab. He said it was hard telling Noah Carter and DeAndre Gholston they would be coming off the bench but they looked him in the eye and said "yes sir."

-Gholston: D'Moi got a big-time rebound. And I just trusted him to get me the ball.

-Gholston: Not starting motivated me a lot more. (Gates said he's never come off the bench in his career). My time, it came. It worked out when my number was called.

-Gates said UCF is an NCAA tournament team and he knew they would start the game strong. He was proud of his guys responding to the run.

-Gholston actually previously hit a game-winner at the buzzer when he was at Milwaukee. The opponent: Dennis Gates' Cleveland State Vikings.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU'S 68-66 WIN OVER UCF

-DeAndre Gholston got put back in the starting lineup in the second half and came through for the Tigers. I don't think he was taking *great* shots (a bunch of them were contested) but, man, he was knocking them down. It helped to have someone able to get shots to drop inside after the team made just three 2-pointers in the first half. And the game-winner ... I mean, goodness gracious. Those are the moments you live for

-Mizzou had a 14-point lead at one point, largely because of how well they were playing on defense. UCF went 1-10 from the field to start the second half with a couple of turnovers. If the Tigers played like that for the whole game, it wouldn't have been nearly as close.

-Missouri actually didn't win the turnover battle, or the rebounding battle. But they did keep both close enough to keep them in the game. That's all it'll really take for them to collect wins -- just don't get manhandled on the glass or off of turnovers, and you'll have a shot.

-Don't overlook D'Moi Hodge's impact on this game. He finished with 15 points and had swiped three steals. Also had the assist on Gholston's game-winner.

-The Tigers are up to 10 wins and while I don't think this game means they stand a good chance against their next three opponents, I do think it means their goal of reaching the NCAA tournament is alive and well. UCF is a good team and I think has a chance to make the tournament, too.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS AT THE HALF: MIZZOU VS. UCF

-I'm not entirely sure what to make of the change to the starting lineup. My best guess is they wanted to start strong defensively, which is what Tre Gomillion and Ronnie DeGray bring to the table. But I don't think it was a great idea to bring Noah Carter off the bench. I get that he's an energy guy, but he's been their best player in a few games this year. I think that contributed to Mizzou's slow start.

-UCF is nails on defense. Mizzou almost suffered the same fate as Ole Miss - they would have if they didn't start just bombing away from deep. The Tigers are 3-8 on 2-pointers so far, that'll have to improve.

-Nick Honor is playing out of his mind. He put the cape on and saved the day. I mentioned after the Kansas game how consistent he's been. Today he's been even better. He's the reason Mizzou is in this game.

-Isiaih Mosley looks rusty, probably because he's only played six minutes in the past three games combined. But while he's shot 0-4, he's still had a positive effect on the game with four assists. He's +5 in nine minutes so far today.

-Mizzou has done a better job turnover-wise today than they did against Kansas, that'll need to continue.

-The have the logos wrong on the stat broadcast - it's very confusing lol

OT Sorta - Potential Tiger fan Christmas gift idea

David McCullough's book, TRUMAN is a fantastic read. It is McCullough's #1 rated book (out of more than 30).. Will especially like if you love history and have plenty of time to read. Good gift for a retired Tiger fan. It's a tome of nearly 1,000 pages, but if you're an OWG like me, it's a page-turner. I received it as a gift but was reluctant to start due to its size but once I did I just kept going. Truman was a fascinating guy. Had no idea - regarded as one of the 5-6top presidents ever. His decisions changed history. A man who started as farmer who tilled his fields behind a team of horses....artillary comander in WW1 in France, becamse a "judge" as part of Kansas City political machine, started a haberdashery in KC, served under FDR, was president at end of WW2 when first atomic bombs were dropped, friend of Churchill, re-elected 2nd term against huge odds (think famous Dewey Wins headline), was in office during the McCarthy communist-scare era, fired military icon Douglas MacArthur, intervened in Korea, overcame incredible odds at every stop. No college education. Plain speaking, a common man who was unaffected by his position, very savy, didn't concern himself with what others thought - just doing the "right thing".

Made me proud of our mascot. MIZ
