Just talked to him earlier. Loved his return trip to Missouri. Said he got to drive around campus and take that in more, which he hadn't done previously. Also got to watch Missouri practice as well. Says he feels like a top priority for Missouri. Wants to be committed by February-March.

Mizzou vs regional rivals

Since the start of the 2021-2022 school year this is how we’ve faired against teams I would consider our regional rivals (kU, Illinois, Arkansas, and K State)

Football:

Arkansas 34- MU 17

K State 40- MU 12

MU 29- Arkansas 27

Basketball:

kU 102- MU 65

Illinois 88- MU 63

Arkansas 87- MU 43

Arkansas 76- MU 57

kU 95- MU 67

That’s 1-7 with a combined football score of 101-58 and a combined basketball score of 448-295. Pathetic.

Self's success against the Mike Anderson/Dennis Gates etc pressing defense style

I had spoken to my best friend at length before the game yesterday about the likelihood of getting obliterated due to Self's success against this particular style of play - the pressing, defense oriented, trapping, contest everything and overplay the passing lanes to create turnovers style.

We had that under Mike Anderson. Bill Self went 9-1 against CMA's Mizzou teams, many of them blowouts. And in the one game Mizzou did win, we had a team that won 31 games but yet trailed Self's team at home by 16 in the first half before rallying to eke out a 2 point win.

Self also obliterated Mike Anderson's pressing, running UAB team in the Sweet Sixteen in 2004 by a score of 100-74.

The reasons why were on display last night. Yes, ku has more talent, always does because they are one of the best teams money can buy. But Self pinpoints the areas where Mizzou is overplaying the passing lanes and backdoor cuts the living hell out of you. Then if you rotate in time to prevent the layup, he's got a spot up three point shooter flared out to the wing who is now wide open under your scrambled defense. The result is a player we know is a three point specialist like Dick just getting wide open threes repeatedly. If the cut isn't open, the primary ballhandler for ku dribble drives straight at the rim to take advantage of the overplaying defense then hands it off for dunks or layups when we rotate, which we also saw over and over.

Defensively in the scrambled game, his teams do a good job of enticing the guy leading the break into trying to take it to the rack or pull up himself and focuses on not allowing the easy dish off to the second or third guy on the break. Our team fell into that over and over last night and it was ugly.

It isn't coincidental. We had a hall of fame coach in Norm Stewart who was well known for not being afraid to run with the Nolan Richardson Arkansas and Billy Tubbs Oklahoma teams. Sometimes it got messy, but he also had way more success against them than most teams. Had a winning record in Fayetteville for quite awhile, and those highly ranked Tubbs OU teams simply could not win in Columbia to save their lives.

We had a coach who played this style already in Mike Anderson, and honestly his was a better version of this than the Gates style. We also know what to expect. With Mike Anderson, this style helps you feast on weaker teams and avoid random upsets to UMKC etc at home because the less talented players can't overcome that sort of pressure D. But against superior talent that has the speed to blow by your overplaying defense and the shooting/scoring ability to capitalize on the open spots the style gives up, you can get obliterated in a hurry.

Is this style the right move to get us back in the NCAA tourney? Maybe, but I mean for as bad as Cuonzo's team was last year, we are only 2 years removed from having made it to the Big Dance as a 9 seed. This style really boxes you in to certain outcomes and I don't know if we really are the type of program that needs to marry ourselves to it. We already did it once under Mike Anderson, it was nice and all, but even Frank Haith was able to take the same players and immediately show how much better they could be in a more traditional system.

Been a long day, back home from the game

knew the board would be a mess. Looked anyway. Figured Mosely not playing would be number one topic.

I have not watched every game. Was at the Coastal Carolina game and Mosely had a great offensive night. In the other games I have watched, have not been that impressed.

I think Gates played his best 9 players today. They weren't/aren't good enough to beat the team we all hate.

Team played really nervous the first 5 minutes..the game was decided before they adjusted to the big time game v. a big time opponent in a tremendous atmosphere.

Once they did...I kept thinking if they could get the lead to 10 prior to the half...they probably would not win but we could have a good game. After the Shaw dunk it was almost there. The next two possessions on offense and defense were killers. Game for sure over.

Prior to this game, I thought East was the best player. Now...I don't think this team has a best player and it will truly have to be someone different every game but Mosely is not the answer.

Meant to add one other point........ku refused to miss any shots early on and no way they are that good. Our Tigers refused to make any shots...no way they are that bad. I do believe that much of it was nerves but also it was the first time they had really been thrown in the fire v. this kind of opponent. It took a while to adjust to the speed and physical play.

OFF TOPIC Open Letter

Dear Team and Power Mizzou Nation,

Has anyone ever thought to theirselves what this board needs more of is open letters? Nah, me neither. Go ahead and block me if you haven’t already, truth be told I’d probably block myself.

At any rate, I’ve said some things today in the heat of the moment and the bottom of the bourbon bottle, I swear I only meant most of them. Really though. This is a new coach, new team, we are 9 and 1, soft schedule I know. Let that sink in. We are 9 and 1. Now I would trade all 9 wins for this one tonight. That makes me an irrational “fan”natic!

We might not be terrible. That’s not nothing. This team saw what is possible at our arena, which is awesome fan support. I’ll support this team, even after getting completely embarrassed by the only opponent that is not allowed to do that to us if our head coach values his job security. Damn I wish the coaching staff and the team showed half as much passion as the fans do. It might not be their thing or maybe times are different but the shots of Stormin Norman were more emotionally inspiring than anything I saw from our bench.

Please accept my apologies for being an ass, but please take a moment to reflect on how much today sucked. I appeal to your competitive nature here to work harder, recruit harder, coach harder, elevate the program damnit. The fans deserve it. We are craving a reason to sell that place out every damn night. Give it to us.

Coach Drink I hope you are paying attention too, because I like you. If you are still our coach when we play those mother pluckers on the gridiron you better give them the same damn gravel enema on national television they just gave us.

Now make those NIL dollars rain down and get our shit together and let’s kick some freaking asses!

Signed,

A bipopolar Power Mizzou poster who gives a big damn.

Rank Coaches on Handling Press Conferences

I know it's early in Coach Gates' tenure, but I thought he had a fascinating way in dealing with questions that I didn't like from the media. I'm mainly interested in @GabeD's take on ranking the coaches who do the best job dealing with questions that they don't like from the media.

I thought Gates' method of saying he didn't understand a question, which in actuality I think he did, as a way to give that media member an opportunity to ask the question another way. That method gives him time to pause and answer in a way that is not too emotional. I know he interpreted one of the questions as saying that his players might have been uncoachable, though I don't think that was the intention of the media member's question. However, I liked that method rather than giving a regrettable response out of anger. I was curious on how others interpreted this.

That led me to ask how Gabe would rank past basketball and football coaches that he covered in terms of handling a press conference. I know Drinkwitz can be prickly when asked a question that he doesn't like, but curious about your take.
