Mizzou showed it can take a punch
Touchdown Luther emerges in Mizzou's win

There's today's coverage. We'll have more in the morning. Quick thoughts:

Missouri won. That's all it has to do.

The penalties are concerning. Got to clean them up. They looked cocky and undisciplined at times Saturday. Needs to be fixed.

The 21 points are about the max Missouri could have given up. Two braindead coverage busts and a bad penalty led to that, but overall Mizzou held a decent BC offense to 295 total yards (190 on 52 of its 54 plays) and less than two yards per carry. I wouldn't have guessed the defense would have more confidence from me than the offense but it does.

That said, the hot takes on Brady Cook are crazy. If you want him to be Jayden Daniels of last year or Patrick Mahomes of any year, he isn't. He's not going to go win most games by himself. But there was a quarterback who lost his team that game on Saturday and it wasn't Brady Cook. I understand this year is going to be full of "He isn't good enough" and "Gabe's just carrying his water because he's a good interview." Fine. You're wrong, but I'll take it all season. I'm not saying he is going to be a national championship QB or a playoff QB. He might be, but I don't know that. But he was plenty good enough today. He's not perfect. And he isn't going to be.

Missouri is a running team. Yes, they have great wide receivers. And yes they can make big plays in the passing game. But they're better running the ball than throwing it (thanks in large part to the fact the OL is better run blocking than pass protecting). They'll need to lean into that.

Believe it or not, Missouri might have gotten better at kicker since last year.

That's all I got for now. Enjoy the night games. We'll be back at it tomorrow. Big week ahead.

Fumble rule question

In the Mizzou/BC game, a MU player fumbled the ball out of bounds. It was brought back to the spot of the fumble. In the UK/UGa game, a UGa player fumbled the ball forward and it was recovered by UGa for a first down. They got to keep the yardage gained on the fumble.

Is the difference between the two plays about the fumble going out of bounds?

OFF TOPIC UFC/MMA Thread

Figured I would start this and try to get it going, since I’ve seen some occasional discussion about it on the board.

Card tonight has been awesome with the number of first round finishes and competitive fights. Really looking forward to the main event. I’m a huge Kattar fan and I have him taking it, but I don’t want to count out Emmett. He’s proven in the past that he has the power to end fights at any time even if he’s down on the scorecards. Just difficult to imagine him putting out Kattar, who’s never been finished in the UFC.

Honestly very encouraged by the win

We had a ton of dumb stuff happen. Penalties (deserved or not), busted coverages, Cook’s inconsistency, and Luther freaking out added up to about our C+ game, and we still beat a pretty good team.

Drink will have a lot to point out on tape. Vanderbilt is very, very similar both in terms of play style and quality to these guys. Gives me a lot of confidence going into next week.

(Not all that) hot take

BC is one of the three best teams Mizzou will play this year.

Vandy is losing to Georgia State in the third quarter
Arkansas struggled with UAB today
Oklahoma has had two straight lackluster efforts
Missisissippi State is getting boatraced by Toledo at home
Auburn is struggling against New Mexico after losing to Cal

Alabama is the best team on the schedule. BC might be as good as anyone else, though A&M and South Carolina and maybe Oklahoma on the right day are in that conversation.

NEW STORY INSTANT REACTION: MIZZOU 27, BOSTON COLLEGE 21

1) I asked all week how Mizzou would react if it was pushed. We found out. Down 14-3, that game was teetering. And Mizzou responded with 21 consecutive points to go up 24-14. The defense clamped down and the offense showed up. Was it perfect? No. Would you like a better start? Of course. But Missouri got punched a little. And it stood up and punched back. That's a good thing to see. You're going to have to do it again this season.

2) My guess is there was a lot of frustration with the defense and the lack of pass rush. But Thomas Castellanos is a frustrating player. You don't really want to put him under too much pressure. Because that opens up lanes for him to take off. You can't take everything away from a D1 offense. If you take away the run, you force him to stand in the pocket and beat you. If he'd have done that, you tip your cap. Missouri bet that he couldn't and Missouri was right.

3) Luther Burden is a money player. Five minutes into the second quarter every single person watching that game wondered why he hadn't touched the ball. His first catch went for 44 yards, Mizzou's longest play of the year. His second was a 19 yard touchdown. He had another 38-yarder. It wasn't just that he had six catches for 117 yards. It was that he had them when Missouri really, really needed them. Big time players make big time plays in big time games. Luther did it. (let's pretend the two awful penalties didn't happen for about two more seconds).

4) Mizzou still didn't make it easy. You can complain about some of the flags. I didn't love the PI on Toriano Pride. There was one that should have been called against a guy defending Theo Wease and wasn't. But Chris McClellan committed a completely awful hands to the face giving BC its first touchdown. Luther Burden committed two 15-yard penalties on one drive (the second was called unnecessary roughness and really should have been unsportsmanlike conduct again and gotten him kicked out of the game). Mizzou went from 3rd and 2 at the 30 to 2nd and 59 from its own 13. And then followed it up with an illegal formation penalty on a punt. They were 30 yards from ending the game and didn't. Just cannot happen. and you can't just say "The refs suck" for all of it. Some of it's being stupid. And, oh, by the way, the secondary completely fell asleep and allowed a 38-yard touchdown pass that made this far more interesting than it needed to be (after Daylan Carnell dropped a pick that would have iced it on the first play of the drive).

5) All Mizzou has to do is win. It won. Power Four games aren't about covering or style points. They're about winning. Mizzou won. It's on track to do what it set out to do. It was harder than it had to be, but that doesn't matter in the end. First test passed. Next one comes next Saturday afternoon.

FOOTBALL Did you see bad things?

Hey guys, know we won, but did you see bad things? We did so many bad things and players we have not good enough. Some very good but same guy I say every week no good. He no good at all. Last night I was just so upset thinking win but bad and now sad and angry. He is just not him.

I would like to also say, not crazy say he not him or be sad upset that he not good or him. I am futbol expert and know good when see good and he no good. Also, why no Drink coach better? If he coach better we win by 15 touchdowns.

Also sad cause I lost favorite blanket, very upset when no have blanket watch game with and no see best play from no good players.

Edit: Alright, failed sayire. Just honestly annoyed by seeing nothing but negative takes in this place after every single win.
