BASKETBALL Is three Q1 Wins Enough?

That seems a bit light from a resume perspective. I think Arkansas put a dagger in the Kentucky Q1 hopes. It seems the consensus has been 21 wins (9-9) is the Magic Number. But I’m not so sure.

Between a light resume and poor metrics, I think that record may have us on the outside looking in. Especially if one of the losses comes to UGA/LSU/Ole Miss.

I think it’s pretty important Mizzou nabs one of these next two games. It would give them a true road Q1 win. And it would take a lot of pressure off them down the stretch.

Sure, it wasnt as comfortable as we hoped. But SC faded in the end

The 70 seems magic and most of the game we knew it would be 80.

SC ran with us for 30 mins. Then they couldnt for 10. The system worked.

Im guessing many will complain but we still have no bad loses. Literally, our loses are awesome loses. We beat the teams we are supposed to beat.

We even beat some of the teams we arent supposed to beat.

This is not the time to fret. Play on boys. Run run run.

I took Tigers -8.5 live. #believer

NCAA and UNC

The NCAA made a dramatic mistake in their resolution of the UNC investigation. There is no question fraud occurred at UNC and letting them off was a humongous mistake. The NCAA was raked under the coals by the media and they were genuinely and rightfully upset at what had caused with their decision. Their decision was incredibly idiotic and they felt they had to do something to right their horrible image. So what did they do? They created the Independent Accountability Resolution Process. They did this to try and halt their negative image. The morale inside the NCAA was horrible especially with the people in enforcement. A number of the key people in enforcement decided to leave with the decision to set up the IARP and made sure their reasons for leaving were crystal clear, UNC decision was a blunder and setting up the IARP would be the final straw.

One only has to look at the decisions handed down by the IARP to understand why this was such a horrible decision.
The head of the IARP was an owner of one of largest chains of sporting goods in the country. If this had been made public would anyone have been the least bit surprised by their decisions. Hell, the guy was protecting his biggest suppliers and customers.

The NCAA now finds itself up against the proverbial wall. They have taken back their enforcement duties and the next decisions will be made by their own personnel. I am fairly sure next up is Kansas. Will the NCAA have the backbone to slam KU or will they pass and give the next one up jail? I believe they will slap KU hard.

It would be fitting!

NEW STORY CLOSING THOUGHTS FROM MIZZOU ARENA

It wasn't great. But it was a win. Which means it wasn't a Quad 4 loss. If Mizzou had lost this game, the tournament hopes would have taken a pretty big hit. It did not lose this game. That's important.

*Dennis Gates said after the game that Mizzou was focusing on a lot of little things and South Carolina was making a bunch of shots to keep them in the game. He gave the Gamecocks a lot of credit and talked about how winning in February is tough. He's right. But it's also fair to be concerned a little bit. We all know that this season is almost certainly going to end in a loss like it does for everybody. And when it does, it's probably going to be because somebody shot lights out against the Tigers. It seems like a lot of somebodies do that. This one wasn't good enough to beat them mostly because it went cold in the last four minutes. But the defense is probably going to be what we talk about whenever that last game happens.

*Nick Honor and Sean East came up huge in the second half. They combined with Kobe Brown to score 37 of Missouri's 41 points after the break. I knew those three were good in the second half. I did not know they were that good. You expect it out of Kobe. As I wrote in my column, he's the guy Missouri has to have do that. Then they just need a couple other guys every night. It doesn't have to be the same two. It probably won't be the same two. Tonight it was Honor and East. Next time it might be two different player.

*I thought Aidan Shaw really gave Missouri good minutes. When South Carolina pushed ahead a little bit in the first half, Shaw came off the bench with a ridiculous dunk on one of Kobe's six assists, then he hit a three. He only played nine minutes, but I thought he turned the tide. Missouri went into the half with a five-point lead and I don't think they do that without Shaw's play.

*I don't know on the Isiaih Mosley situation, guys. I really don't. I thought we were past this. I can't say for sure if it's related to what kept him out for a month or if this is something completely different. And Gates isn't about to start telling us now.

I've got to believe that wasn't exactly mutual agreement. I'm assuming the coach told him he wasn't playing tonight. I assume he will play Saturday at Tennessee, but I don't know. Trust me, I'm as frustrated as you guys are (well, maybe not quite, but it's frustrating). If I could tell you what was happening, I'd do it. We all respected his privacy the first time around, but if this is going to be an every game thing, at some point, you guys deserve some answers. If I get any, you'll get them. Until then, I don't know, I guess we just wait to see if he's at shootaround every night. Honestly, I joked with a couple people tonight that sometimes I wonder if Gates plays some sort of game at practice the day before every game and the two people who finish last don't get to play the next day. Because a few guys really seem to yoyo in and out of the lineup on this team. But he's the coach and he's winning, so most of the buttons he's pushing have been the right ones.

*Saturday's the toughest game of the year. Missouri hasn't been very good on the road and Tennessee's got the best defense in the country. A loss is expected. A lopsided loss won't surprise me. But don't lose your minds if it happens. Mizzou's at Auburn next Tuesday and the Tigers will have lost five of six by then assuming they don't beat Bama on Saturday. Win that one and the double bye comes back into play because right now, Mizzou is only a game behind Auburn and Kentucky for fourth place. Even if you lose that one, you're fine. Come back home, hopefully you have everybody available for the final five games of the year and you make a push and get some momentum headed into March. Because March matters again for Mizzou.

*Column, video and Drew's quick thoughts are on the front. He's working on the full notebook. Talk to you tomorrow.

NIL Guidelines for Paying High School Players Vary by State

Question came up with GabeD yesterday at STL Tiger Club whether high school players can be paid NIL money and retain their amateur status. Apparently, this is a state-by-state issue, dependent on local legislation/statutes. Article summarizing each state's guidelines is here (as of December 2022): https://biz.opendorse.com/blog/nil-high-school/. Also a long story about Jaden Rashada's recruitment and NIL money, where his receipt of NIL money under Cali's more relaxed rules is addressed: https://theathletic.com/4149181/2023/02/06/jaden-rashada-nil/.

Clear disadvantage for some schools/athletes, but also a dilemma--do you pay players under a contract before they sign the commitment letter? If so, does that violate the general guidelines concerning "pay to play"? Then, do you/should you sue the kid if/when he reneges to the school? Rashada paid back the money to Miami when he flipped to FL.

Last night's game

at the end was one of my pet peeves with I'm betting is one of many on this board. Each part of a new year we seem to have these mentioned. The amount of time need for the game. Everyone wants to shorten them. I don't necessarily want to shorten games, but in BB I do seriously want the TV networks to fix this, but not sure how.
I wasn't able to watch the game last night, but I recorded it. When I started the game, there was 20.9 seconds left in the Ole Mizz/GA game. I backed up to that start and timed the amount of time it took to get to our game. 13 minutes and 34 seconds! That under most circumstances is not a long time, but waiting for another game to get on TV at the end of a BB game seems hours at times. When the got to our game, there was 15 minutes and a few seconds left. Our previous women's game had the same problem with only about 1 minutes left in their first half. Which was about the same time as how much was missed in the start of ours last night.
I don't know how that 13.34 would figure in to most close basketball games, but it may not be far off. Especially when we miss about 1/4 of the next game. It does happen on ESPN, in particular, but it happens often and is my pet peeve for the day. 🤣
