Mizzou picked up a pair of wins last week, let's talk some hoops!

Whichever one is on the tech staff looks ROUGH.

In Gordo's area D-I Basketball rankings...you may recall that last year we were ranked 5th out of 6 at one point. Worth pointing out...we played at mildly scary, too-close game with SEMO early in the season...winning only 96-89 at home on December 4th.

Other notables: we beat #2 Illinois 93-71 at a neutral site game...SLUH lost to SIUE 69-67 on December 21st.😮

I keep seeing, on here and other places, the possibility of him bolting sooner than later with the success he has had.

I was talking with a buddy last night, and I just don’t think it’s true.

I think there is a lot of Gary Pinkel in Gates. I think he’s the type that wants to create his own legacy.

Leonard Hamilton tried the move around, follow the bag, and then found a home at Florida State and he stuck there and became synonymous with the program, like a Norm Stewart.

I could very much see Gates anchoring down and calling Columbia home.

I think so. He might even get 2 penalties and an ejection. One for unnecessary roughness for the “Suh-plex” of Gabbert (they’ve called this in college for hits on WR’s lately), and one for unnecessary roughness for the “body weight on quarterback” rule, when he rolled onto his leg. The play had broken down, and Gabbert fumbled before the suplex, so everyone’s eyes were watching the ball on ground. If it gets reviewed, Suh might be kicked out. Suh would go on to be a known dirty player in the NFL, and this play should’ve been the start of his bad rep instead of acclaim as a great hit for a Heisman finalist. Gabbert, also amazingly still playing in NFL, has never been as mobile as before that hit.

Mizzou Arena! And kudos to the students! They show up early and are loud and involved the whole game. I think we are becoming a place that opponents dread to come play- like Hearnes back in the day but perhaps even more so.

The Southeastern Conference aims to send a large contingent to the NCAA Tournament. The powerful Big 12 expects to put an even larger group into the bracket.
So Saturday’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge will give each league a chance to make its case:

Seeing some real juice in the building. This is what Mizzou basketball used to be like, night in and night out. Norm storming up and down the sideline, the Hearnes Center rocking. And don’t think an environment like that doesn’t energize players, influence referees and impress recruits. Thank you, Dennis Gates. Thank you, DRF. Thank you, students. Can’t wait to get back for a game.

Did we get the young man to commit after yesterday? What else does he need to see?

Notable: only one college player projected in the top-5. Seemingly more and more top draft picks are coming from elsewhere (Europe, G League, and Over-Time Elite)

Top three college player projections are all SEC freshmen players.

The SEC may have gotten beat 7-3 in the SEC/Big-12 Challenge...but apparently we have the most high end NBA talent of all the leagues in college basketball

Arkansas has FOUR players projected to be drafted (at 6, 7, 38, and 55)!
Alabama has TWO (numbers 4 and 16)
Kentucky TWO (#13 and 57)
South Carolina has ONE at #14

The SEC has NINE players projected in the top two rounds (numbers 4, 6, 7, 13, 14, 16, 38, 55, and 59)
ACC has 8 (numbers 20, 21, 26, 31, 40, 46, 49, 53)
Big 12 has 7 (numbers 11, 12, 23, 25, 35, 48, 54)
Big-10 has 7 (numbers 10, 17, 19, 30, 42, 44, 46)
Pac-12 has only THREE (at numbers 22, 34, 39)
Gonzaga has TWO (numbers 51 and 60)
Houston has ONE at # 9
UCF has ONE at #24

Interesting to note all the NBA talent projected to come out of the SEC.

Gates, men’s basketball has sold out five home games this season with average attendance up 69% from last year, to 11,151 fans per game. For total home attendance, MU has climbed to No. 17 in Division I, up from No. 75 last year.

“We’ve rebuilt our ticket sales force and we’ve seen some good early returns,” Reed-Francois said. “In fiscal year 2023, we’ve led the Southeastern Conference in attendance growth. We’ve made an emphasis on bringing students to games. So we hired a director of student engagement. We’ve seen a 38% growth in student attendance. We’re trying to be innovative.”

I like this conversation. We don't have to wait to see if he can succeed "with his own guys" because this is his squad... an incomplete one at that as he didn't even have a recruiting cycle ahead of it. No, I didn't think this would be entertained in year 1, but Gates has been damn impressive and is knocking on the SEC COY door.

I have no idea if any better programs will come after him this off season, but I do know this.
1. Mizzou can afford him (long-term)
2. Mizzou can be one of the "big boys"

Everything this guy does is impressive. I think we all want him in black & gold a long time. Personally, I think extension talk will happen in the off season... and I bet his agent has already been texting DRF.

Not sure what team we have making the calls today but they appear to have been fair and accurate.
