The SEC football hierarchy is historically roughly like this, plus or minus a spot or two:
Alabama
Texas
Oklahoma
Georgia
LSU
Florida
Tennessee
Auburn
Texas A&M
Arkansas
Mizzou
Ole Miss
South Carolina
Mississippi State
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
Now, there are somes schools near the bottom who are over-performing their history lately (Ole Miss, South Carolina, Kentucky, for example) and some that have been underperforming (Florida, Texas, Texas A&M for example). But that's the general ranking. Mizzou has actually done about as well as you would expect, historically, over the last decade or so. It would be nice to see us do a little better than that, but I doubt we'll get much higher than around 8th or 9th overall.
For basketball it looks something like this:
Kentucky
Arkansas
Florida
Texas
Oklahoma
Mizzou
LSU
Tennessee
Alabama
Vanderbilt
Texas A&M
Auburn
Mississippi State
Georgia
South Carolina
Ole Miss
So again, there are some schools over-performing and underperforming their historical record. For the past decade, Mizzou has been underperforming big time. In the SEC, in basketball, Mizzou should be the equivalent of what LSU and Florida are in football. Instead they've been down there with South Carolina and Ole Miss.
For the first time in a while, with Gates, I feel like maybe we're going to see ourselves actually over-perform our historical place in the SEC. I think we could see us as one of the top 3 or 4 programs in the league if we can get Gates to stick around. But at a minimum I expect us to be back in that 5 to 7 range.
