FOOTBALL What's the story on THIS 5-star QB who announced he is entering the Portal???

Washington Huskies quarterback Sam Huard is reportedly leaving the program. According to a report from Mike Vorel of the Seattle Times, Huard is entering his name into the transfer portal.

His decision comes after Michael Penix Jr announced he's coming back for another season. Penix was one of the best quarterbacks in the country last season and likely would have started again.

Fans are still sad to see Huard go.

FOOTBALL Way to early potential Ranking of schedule

2023 schedule with way to early pre-season rankings ( Before spring ball and Spring portal movement)

This schedule will be damn tough but also presents an opportunity to be ranked and position ourselves with a nice quality bowl. If the offense can be 15-20% better in scoring I think this will be a fun year!

The month of October and the first 2 weeks of November will be hell but may also solidify us in the rankings if all goes as planned.

Just a little fodder for the day after the NATTY

SEC basketball vs football hierarchy

The SEC football hierarchy is historically roughly like this, plus or minus a spot or two:

Alabama
Texas
Oklahoma
Georgia
LSU
Florida
Tennessee
Auburn
Texas A&M
Arkansas
Mizzou
Ole Miss
South Carolina
Mississippi State
Kentucky
Vanderbilt

Now, there are somes schools near the bottom who are over-performing their history lately (Ole Miss, South Carolina, Kentucky, for example) and some that have been underperforming (Florida, Texas, Texas A&M for example). But that's the general ranking. Mizzou has actually done about as well as you would expect, historically, over the last decade or so. It would be nice to see us do a little better than that, but I doubt we'll get much higher than around 8th or 9th overall.

For basketball it looks something like this:

Kentucky
Arkansas
Florida
Texas
Oklahoma
Mizzou
LSU
Tennessee
Alabama
Vanderbilt
Texas A&M
Auburn
Mississippi State
Georgia
South Carolina
Ole Miss

So again, there are some schools over-performing and underperforming their historical record. For the past decade, Mizzou has been underperforming big time. In the SEC, in basketball, Mizzou should be the equivalent of what LSU and Florida are in football. Instead they've been down there with South Carolina and Ole Miss.

For the first time in a while, with Gates, I feel like maybe we're going to see ourselves actually over-perform our historical place in the SEC. I think we could see us as one of the top 3 or 4 programs in the league if we can get Gates to stick around. But at a minimum I expect us to be back in that 5 to 7 range.

Who is the Best Portal QB Out There?

OC on board, potential starting OT committed, Peat coming back to add depth to RB room, defense continues to load up, it seems that other than some more OL help the biggest question is who do you add to the QB room. I hope the Horn/Johnson combo is our future starting this year, but someone who knows about the options out there please chime in.

BASKETBALL Zone Tomorrow Night

Looking at the stats, A&M looks to be a prime opportunity to come out in the zone that Gates has used more and more as of late.

A&M is a driving team. They get to the line a lot. Their FTA / FGA is 46.8, which is 5th in the nation. They take a lot of free throws. In fact, their percentage of points from the free throw line is 25.2, which is 2nd in the nation.

Conversely, they don’t shoot it well from three. They shoot 31% from behind the arc, which is 294th in the nation. Only 24.7% of their points come from behind the line. Compare that to Mizzou, who scores 33.5% of their points behind the arc.

This seems like a prime opportunity to come out in zone and force A&M to beat them over the top. Don’t let them get the lane. Don’t let them get to the line. And then just hope you can limit the damage on the glass.

They are an elite offensive rebounding team. 19th in the country to be exact. I’m sure they will get theirs on the glass. It’s tough to rebound out of a zone. But I still think zone is the most effective way to defend this team in the half-court.
