SEC Network post game treat…

Thank you for airing the Mizzou@USC game immediately following the Mizzou beat down of Illinois. I have a few thoughts: Lovett had a great game-he fast…Cook can fly…Rakestraw may be best surprise…Carlies lays the wood…Luther is just getting started…Elijah Young...Abrams-Draine is ACTIVE..Rattler was awful…Marshawn Lloyd is good….2nd half…Defense-WOW! Mevis was shaky, but effective..8, 28, 9 were on fire. Schrader was a battering ram…Drink owns USC (3-0).

NEW STORY QUICK THOUGHTS; MIZZOU 68, UCF 66

Well I had this all written. And then the last minute happened. Good Lord. Believe it or not, this does happen to other teams. Missouri fans think they’re cursed and they only lose games this way. Sometimes you get the bounce.

Credit D’Moi Hodge for somehow finding a way to keep the ball alive after he had fallen down. The unsung hero there is Hodge finding a way to shovel the ball to DeAndre Gholston while he was lying flat on his stomach.

That wasn’t the only play those two made. Hodge and Gholston really saved the day in the second half. Both were aggressive, both hit some big shots. Gholston had 16 all after the break. Hodge ended up with 15, 4 rebounds and 3 assists and really brought the energy in the second half when Mizzou looked like it was going to run away. They were needed. Kobe Brown was nowhere to be seen in the second half. Noah Carter didn’t have a very good day.

Combined stats from the “power forwards” (Carter and Brown): 15 points (5-10 shooting), 8 rebounds, 8 turnovers. Missouri needs better than that to beat good competition. It worked today. It probably won’t work too often.

This is a flawed team. It’s not always going to look pretty. But they play tough and they play hard and they’re generally fun to watch. That’s a step forward. Understand there are going to be some bumps along the way.

This is a big win. This is the kind of game that can determine whether this is an NIT team with a chance maybe to be a little bit better. I know everyone wants to win the Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky type games, but winning games like this and Wichita State signify progress. This season was never about Missouri being a top 20 team. It was about them looking improved from last year. So far they have.

Best defensive effort we’ve seen. Dennis Gates threw in some zone and after the terrible start, Mizzou held UCF down. I wasn’t sure the Tigers could win a game that wasn’t played in the 80s. They did. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a great defensive team. But it was better today than it’s been.

Gates gets credit for playing it out in the final 30 seconds. If his team doesn't get a stop there, the game might be over. But he trusted the defense and let his team go without a timeout with eight seconds left. It worked. If it didn't work, he might be getting criticized. But it did.

The best defense might have come at the free throw line. Three consecutive missed free throws by Brandon Suggs in a 63-60 game with a little more than three minutes left is ROUGH for the Knights.

Ronnie DeGray was big down the stretch. Made a couple of free throws, got a huge steal. Gotta have guys who aren’t stars make plays sometimes. He did today.

Isiaih Mosley played so that's good. Only played ten minutes. Missed all four of his shots but did have four assists. It's obviously going to still take a while to integrate him. I guess the goal at this point is to get to about February and have him know his role and play it well. But at least we don't have to ask why he didn't play.

I think we’re going to see a reduction in minutes for Tre Gomillion. He’s a good role player, a nice story. I don’t think he can be a factor as you get into regular high major competition.

What does this team do well offensively if the three isn’t falling? They were above 50% for the day (13-25). They shot more threes than twos (26 to 21). That just doesn’t seem like a sustainable recipe to me.

Overall, hell of a win. You take them any way you can get them. 10-1 with three tough ones coming up. Find a way to even get one of the next three and you're feeling pretty good about yourself headed into 2023.

BASKETBALL POSTGAME THREAD: BRAGGIN' RIGHTS

Talking to Kobe Brown, D'Moi Hodge and Dennis Gates

-Gates said he thought his team was a connected going into this one as they were against UCF. He said he challenged his team and told them that good teams get better over Christmas break.

-Gates said his family wasn't able to make it to the game and was very thankful for the fans that were able to come.

-Gates said he didn't think his team played well tonight - "I'm dead serious." He said he's not going to let his guys get complacent.

-Gates said he's extremely proud of Kobe - who finished this semester with a 4.0 GPA.

-Kobe said he approached tonight like every other game. His shots were just going in today.

-Gates said he credits Brad Underwood for continuing the tradition at Illinois. He said he wants to do the same for Mizzou.

-D'Moi said their defensive approach was to keep Illinois in front of them - no gambling. Gates said he thought their energy was used against them in the Kansas game and wanted them to channel it better tonight. They did.

-Kobe said his outside shot was one of his main focal points in the offseason. He said he's got a lot more confidence with it this season. He said Gates gets onto him when he doesn't take the shot. He's up over 40% from deep this year.

-Gates said he thinks we saw "a fraction" of Kobe's assertiveness today. He wants Kobe to continue to lead the team.

-Gates said Kobe has approached him at times this year saying "What's up with Ronnie?" hinting that he wanted DeGray to play more. Gates said he listened because he trusts his players and credited Ronnie for how he approached not getting a ton of minutes early on. He said it shows guys who aren't playing a ton right now they just have to stay ready for when their number is called.

-Brad Underwood: All credit to Mizzou. That was horrible. As a coach, I didn't do a very good job. They out-toughed us, they out-fought us, they took our ball, they out-executed us. ... That was the worst defense that any of my teams have ever played. It was just mistake after mistake after mistake.

Beatdown of Illinois: GORGEOUS.

The Good:

In short, the biggest Mizzou beat-down of the Illini in the history of this storied rivalry. I don't really have much to add, as the game spoke for itself. The perfect counter / palette-cleanser to the ku debacle. Better yet, I didn't see it coming. A win? Sure. You always hope.

This wasn't merely a win. This was Missouri stomping Illinois like a narc at a biker rally.

In short:

Oh, and a Merry Christmas to all...to to all a VERY good night!

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU'S 92-85 WIN OVER PENN

-Huge night for Noah Carter. He had 28 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and two steals. He had the team's best plus/minus at +26. He showed every reason why he was a commodity in the transfer portal.

-Somebody said it in the game thread, but Kobe Brown was a bit slow getting to his move when they fed him in the post. It's one thing to shoot more 3s than 2s (which Mizzou did, by the way -- they were three shy of tying the record for 3-point attempts), but it's another to actually let the defense wall up against you.

-Dennis Gates shortened the rotation when it mattered. Mo Diarra didn't play in the second half -- Kaleb Brown, DeAndre Gholston and Sean East played just four minutes each. None of them played particularly well, so it made sense. But it makes you wonder if Gates tipped his hand on who his top 8 are.

-Tre Gomillion had a really good second half -- 10 points, 4 reboudns, 2 assists and physical defense. You can tell he's been playing with D'Moi Hodge for a long time, they have a good connection. It's looking like it was a good idea for Gates to bring those guys over with him.

-The Tigers got crushed on the boards in the first half, but kept it even in the second. I wrote this in my stats piece earlier this week, bu it's gonna take a team effort every single night for a group sorely lacking in size. ESPECIALLY when Kobe Brown goes from grabbing 14 rebounds to grabbing zero.

-Mizzou hasn't dominated either team they've played so far but they have, at least, won both games. It's better than the alternative.
