No idea how the season will end or whether or not Odom will turn things around but this season sure does feel similar to 2004.
We came into the year with high expectations (we were ranked the first two weeks of the year as high as 18th) which came crashing down with a shocking road loss to Troy in week two. After that we bounced back with a few wins starting off conference play 2-0.
Then the wheels came off. Lost five in a row. Despite having a solid defense the offense was completely terrible with an explosive running QB trying to be a pocket passer. It was really depressing.
No one (and I mean no one) realized that the program was set to average 9 wins a season for the next decade.
Tony Temple, William Franklin, and Martin Rucker were all on that 2004 team.
Ziggy Hood, Chase Coffman and the greatest QB in Mizzou history committed to play football for that team.
As bad as we are right now, we're still better (for now) than that team was in 2004. Sagarin currently has us rated at 46th and in 2004 we finished 60th.
Interestingly enough, the team that Sagarin ranked 59th in 2004 will really shock you.. it was Alabama just three years away from starting the most dominant run in college football history.
The point is don't get too depressed. We're having a tough year. It's not the end of the program. Things can improve.
