Wanted to put this out there. No pressure, nobody has to do a thing, but I wanted to put it out there for those that would be so moved.
By now, most of you have read Riley Maher's story on here. If not, here was the original post from her father a few weeks back. Last weekend, Riley and her dad got to attend the Mizzou hoops game and meet Cuonzo Martin.
I had a chance to chat with them for a few minutes before the game as well. Riley is a great kid. Incredibly gracious and appreciative and appeared to have a great time at the game (if she didn't, she's also a great actor to make her dad feel good). When Jeff posted his original message, I had no idea that he grew up five houses down from me and graduated from the fine institution of Park Hill High School a few years ahead of me. More proof, though, that the best of us went to Park Hill.
Anyway, to the point, I want to stress in no way is @eyeguy71 asking me to do this and he doesn't know I'm posting it. From the little time I've gotten to know him and Riley, they'd probably be a bit embarrassed (as evidenced by the fact that when he told Riley they got basketball tickets and dinner in CoMo she asked "Why are they doing all of this?").
Riley's story has hit home with me and with many others who have crossed paths with her since her diagnosis. She enters round three of chemotherapy next week and with good fortune will be home for Christmas. So I started thinking about what we could do to lift the spirits of one of our own here at PM. Here's what I came up with:
For those who might have a few extra bucks and would be so inclined, I ask you to make a donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of Riley Maher. Hopefully it helps her in her fight. If not, it will help someone you know and someone you love. In this day and age, very few things can unite us all. But we can all agree cancer sucks. We can agree it sucks even more when it attacks a child.
PowerMizzou made a donation in honor of Riley this afternoon. I ask you, again, if you're interested and you can, to click here and donate in honor of Riley Maher.
Consider it our small way of helping a great family while simultaneously saying "**** Cancer!"
In addition if you choose to donate and would like to send a ecard to let Riley know of your donation send them to powermizzou@gmail.com and I will forward them to the family unless Jeff wants to share his email address here.
