I love when people question whether Barry Odom can recruit or not…
It is a fair statement to say he has not recruited players with STARS next to their name as well as some of the big time recruiters in this country but consider this….
Tennessee has recruited 4 top 15 classes in the country in a row and is absolutely awful. Florida has recruited 4 top 20 classes and they are absolutely terrible. The perception of college football recruiting is so heavily skewed by STARS. Forget STARS for a second and now look at whether Barry Odom can recruit or not….
Rashad Brandon – Major Contributor at DT this year Barry found at ASA College brought in over the last 12 months. Turned down OU and Ole Miss to come to Mizzou.
Yasir Durant – Flipped from San Diego St to Missouri because Missouri found him as a qualifier after one year of junior college ball when most junior college kids are assumed not able to come out of Junior College in One Year. I believe BO found him before other people knew he was available. Yasir beat out a returning starter at Left Tackle. He did this in the last 12 months.
Kaleb Prewitt – Coach Odom sought him out from Kansas St as Transfer. Now Kaleb is helping us tremendously on the back end at safety. Coach Odom brought him in.
Larry Rountree – His biggest scholarship offer was APPALACHIAN ST! Now he is running people over as a true freshman and producing in the SEC. Signed him in 2017.
Chris Turner – Defensive End that we were able to hold on to that is out there right now on a majority of our snaps as a TRUE FRESHMAN on the line in the SEC. He had one other big offer from Arkansas who offered him after BO found him as a 2 star with low offers in Louisiana.
Kobie Whiteside – Was committed to Colorado St and BO found him late in the process, signed him, and we have seen him be a plug in the middle and key contributor as a TRUE FRESHMAN at DEFENSIVE TACKLE in the SEC.
Akial Byers – Was an Alabama Commitment that Alabama and every one else gave up on due to grades. BO and Staff stayed with him and watched his grades improve to make him a full qualifier. Akial has been on the field at both DT and DEnd in the SEC as a TRUE FRESHMAN.
Adam Sparks- Adam may look like he is not ready to play because of size this year out at Corner back but the kid is still contributing as a TRUE FRESHMAN in the SEC. BO got him to flip from Vanderbilt late in the recruiting process.
Nate Anderson – Nate was a Junior College find at Defensive End from Mew Mexico Military Institute. He was signed in 2017 and is contributing at DEFENSIVE END in year 1 in the SEC.
Jamal Brooks, Aubrey Miller, and Tyree Gillespie when you watch our kick off team are physical SEC caliber players that are true freshman out on the field.
I bring up all of these examples to show that maybe the turn around Barry Odom was referring too is actually happening in front of our eyes. Maybe rather than saying he cannot recruit because he is not signing the football equivalent of Michael Porter or 10 four stars in a class could be over stated because we are watching multiple guys he recruited contribute at a high level in their FIRST year in a Tiger Uniform. Watch the highlight tapes of the kids we have committed in this class. Barry is finding talent under the radar. When you look at the roster and what is coming back with what he has recruited it is clear to see we are a much different team in the trenches. I have heard incredible things from people in the program about lineman like CASE COOK, HYRIN WHITE, LARRY BOROM, and CALEB SAMPSON who all are redshirting that all in size are going to continue to make us MASSIVE on BOTH lines. Maybe instead of STARS we should look at the production of these young kids and transfers Barry has brought in and see that BO & STAFF has FOUND talent. Which ultimately is better for your culture because it eliminates the entitlement of highly recruited pre-madonna’s that have been promised everything before their arrival. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE he is FINDING THE RIGHT KIDS FOR OUR PROGRAM.
