In Pinkel's first 2 seasons he took the recruiting angle of getting guys from the St. Louis area. He got burned and a lot of those athletes in guys like Damien Nash and guys you never heard of quit or was in his doghouse. He eventually started recruiting at places were the Big 12 foot print was and got guys who had a football mindset. I am not saying you can't find good talent in St. Louis but in some cases you need to spread out in football minded territories to gather a foundation and then you get some guys in St. Louis. IMO you can get good quality players or a lot of bad ones with negative attitudes but you need to build consistent and moderate success to see a few come our way.
