My point in telling this story is to illustrate why NIL IS needed.
This Story takes place in the early 80s's no names or Identifying info will be used for reasons that will be apparent in a second. I have met the source but did not hear this particular story from him For the TLDR crowd I will keep this short.
This story takes place in the Midwest at a small D2 college and involves an OL who got reasonable grades but was not on a full scholarship and could not for class scheduling reasons get a job. The coach used to pay him $400 a week just to live on.
paying players has been around forever in college sports so spare me the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching.
