Looking at Departures from our opening night roster to where we sit today. I’m excited, but a part of me wonders if the excitement just stems from action and not actual talent upgrade. So going to dig in a bit here.
Diarra > Wilmore
I’d be an upgrade over Wilmore but we landed what most sites would recognize as a top 5 Juco player who is athletic, agile, mobile, and can dribble it and shoot it well for a big.
Brazile > Shaw
Just because we lost a known commodity for an unknown. Although Shaw is a 4 star, having Brazile back would’ve been nice. Having Shaw for 4 years seems like a nice consolation but for the 22/23 season production will dip.
East > Brookshire
We have a pg. that’s a win. Brookshire was more of a combo guy or an undersized 2 that didn’t shoot it great for us and fell out of the rotation. East does a nice job playing a complete game and will provide a big boost to our roster.
Gomillion = Pickett
Probably not going to be liked by most who read but Gomillion was the Horizon defensive player of the year 2 seasons ago. Pickett to me was one of our top defenders. Neither has a great offensive game. Javon had his moments but also got stuffed at the rim (won’t miss that), but Gomillion will be guarding a different breed of athlete in the SEC.
Gordon > Gholston
Gholston was a guy Gates was on already even to bring to Cleveland St. This is the one transfer spot I wish we could rescind and try to add Roche, Hodge, Adam Miller. Gholston seems like a bench 2/3 and to me that’s Boogie’s ceiling on an SEC team so it doesn’t move the needle for me. Gordon was one of our best defenders, played well in transition, and shot the 3 better than the rest of what we had.
Carter > Durugordon
Durugordon had some flashes of potential in his limited time but seemed lost on where to be at times as well so it was best he moved on. Carter was a somewhat highly sought after transfer who does a little bit of everything similarly to Kobe Brown. Not sure I like both of them on the floor at the same time, but I don’t think he came here to come off the bench. I think if an opposition has 2 really good wings we’re in trouble bc Carter and Brown are undersized 4’s that one will have to play
The 3 defensively and might get worked over. Pray I’m wrong.
someone with Synergy stats or analytics can dive deeper, but that’s my amateur analysis. I like what we’ve done just because we’ve added a PG and a big that gives us a possible mismatch with opponents. But what we’ve done in the 2-3-4 spots don’t move the needle for me a bit.
