This team seems to placate everyone.
Now that we have the gift of hindsight, is it really shameful to have losses to S Car, Kentucky, and GA? Not at all, these are teams capable of winning. You aren't necessarily a bad football team to get beaten by those teams.
Sure, we didn't look good against Missouri State. But we won. And a decent team might get rolled by Auburn.
The real flop was Purdue. I think we can all agree that there is no real defense for being non-competitive in that game. Especially the offense. Just doesn't add up.
But even great teams flop, all the time, year after year. I really don't think Iowa State is better than Oklahoma, Syracuse is better than Clemson, Arizona St better than Washington, etc. Sometimes decent teams have bad games.
So, the HCBO lovers can point to all these things and say, "See? We aren't so bad. We are getting better."
The Fire Odom-ers have a point too. This team has look TERRIBLE at times, especially on defense. The special teams are a train wreck, the team still lacks discipline, and does not exemplify any traits of a well coached team, rebuild or not.
I think it all comes down to the next few weeks. If HCBO gets this team to a bowl, he deserves to stay. If we get blown out by Florida, and win one or two more, a case could be made for him to be gone.
Nothing matters up to now, it's a new season, and the coach is in charge of his own destiny. If he is the coach for Missouri in 5 years, or he is the D coordinator at Arkansas St, he will look back at the last half of the 2017 season and say, "those were the games I needed to win."
