Reading the online version of the weekly paper from the county where our Michigan lake cottage is located and saw an obituary for a very loyal Mizzou alumnus.
Edwin (Bud) Werner was the gentleman who walked the south shore of Crystal Lake always wearing something Mizzou-related. I stopped to talk with him several times the past two summers and we would joke about conspiring to steal the ku flag down the road under cover of darkness.
Bud grew up in Sikeston and graduated from Mizzou in 1954, a member of Phi Delta Theta, ODK and QEBH. He met his wife, Jackie, at Mizzou. Her father was Jack Matthews, the beloved dean of students at Mizzou from 1950 to 1970. Brian Burnes' book on the 175-year history of Mizzou has an entire chapter on Dean Matthews. The Werners' cottage on Crystal Lake has white columns across the front porch.
My mom played tennis with Jackie in Michigan for about 20 years--until she had to stop playing in her late 70s. Bud remembered my mom immediately the first time I stopped to talk with him the summer after she passed away.
Bud passed away November 25 in Winston-Salem, NC, from cancer. The obituary mentions a son living in Overland Park. If anyone knows Mark and Dorothee Werner of OPK, I'd really like to have their address to drop them a note. I think I will send a memorial contribution to the Mizzou Alumni Association's Traditions Fund in his memory.
