Avery Johnson?

Honest question: why do some here view this as a great hire? Not saying it couldn't be but has the guy ever been a college coach or shown he can recruit? Like I said maybe he will be really good but I see people here lamenting that Bama hired him. Why is this viewed as a better hire than, say, Rick Barnes?
