on Cross: "After much thought we decided to make a move within the staff with the change. This has absolutely zero to do with on the field performance or non performances. More do with philosophical difference would be the biggest factor in making the move."
I asked him why not in the offseason. He didn't answer. He said there's no right time or wrong time. "You don't put a watch on when you make a decision."
On reshuffling the responsibilities: People will have to do a little bit more. Haley has been a coordinator before. Walters has been with Odom a long time and knows how things work. Brian Odom has been around long enough to know the ins and outs. Odom will take over coaching the inside linebackers.
Asked how this will impact his ability to coach the offense as well: "I haven't had much to do with the offense...as far as game planning with that side of the ball I'm not in there making decisions."
I asked him considering he said he did too much last year if he was concerned about that being an issue and he said no. Said "I'm in a better spot" and said Mike McHugh and Jim Sterk have done a good job helping take some responsibilities off his plate.
On filling the DC role down the road: "Where we're at in the season, I like the spot of being able to call the defense and working together with our staff defensively...If we get to the point that need to make that decision, I will. At this point, I'm trying to do everything we can as a staff to get ready to go play our best on Saturday."
On Sterk's involvement with the decision: "Jim's going to be involved with every decision of this magnitude."
On special teams: Everything except KOR "didn't play winning football." Was asked specifically if Johnson would continue to handle punt returns. Never answered.
