Missouri (20-14) (4-8 SEC) heads down to Springfield to take on #16 Missouri State (25-6) at Hammons Field tonight at 6:35 p.m.
The Tigers and Bears have met 50 times over the years with Missouri State leading the all-time series 26-24. The Bears are off to their best start in school history. Missouri State has won three of the last four meetings with the Tigers. The Bears swept the annual two game series last year winning 13-8 at Hammons Field and 9-8 at Taylor Stadium.
The Tigers have won six of eight games and back-to-back SEC series. Missouri is coming off a series victory over Auburn last weekend. In last weekend’s series, Tanner Houck delivered a spectacular complete game shutout in which the Tigers won 2-0 on Friday night. It was Houck’s second complete game shutout of the season.
Houck has now won two SEC Pitcher of the Week awards this season and three in his career. Batters are hitting .176 against Houck in SEC play. Houck has 30 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched while only allowing eight walks.
The Mizzou offense has shown signs of confidence, averaging 6.9 runs in its last seven games. Missouri has 26 extra-base hits in those seven games. The Tiger offense also leads the SEC in walks with 178.
The Missouri State offense is not too shabby either. The Bears rank fifth nationally in home runs (42), sixth in slugging (.511) and 16th in total runs scored (252). Spencer Johnson was named MVC Player of the Week and a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday after hitting four home runs and driving in four runs in MSU’s four games last week according to the team website.
