A lot of people might say DGB but statistically the very best player dismissed for violations of team rules was John Matuszak. He went to Tampa, was an all American and then went on to pro ball years with the Raiders.
Devine told me it was the toughest situation he ever faced as a coach. Not because of the dismissal but because he decided to do it alone without any other coaches present. As soon as Matuszak walked in to Devine's office, Devine thought to himself if loses his temper I might be a goner!
During the same time period we are in now, Matuszak was playing DT and TE. I remember watching one practice where he caught about a 20yard pass and then literally ran over the defensive back for a TD. I mean he hit the guy in full stride and destroyed him.
He might have been a great player for us if he learned out to control his animal temper.
