We had Blair Kerkhoff from the Kansas City Star at the Tiger Club of Kansas City today. Blair has been a friend of the Club for about 15 years.

Blair didn't hide his thoughts on the Tiger football team. Said he originally expected the Tigers to win six, including two in the conference. He wasn’t too concerned after the Missouri State game: The team improved after the half and he could chalk it up to keeping things vanilla for the next opponent. He thought that the South Carolina game wasn’t too bad … those things happen. As for Saturday ... said that, relative to expectations, this was the most disappointed he has been in a Mizzou game.

Said he and Tod Palmer discussed the basketball coaching search when it first started and agreed that the guy should be Cuonzo Martin. Tom Crean would have been ok, Blair thought, but the best choice would be Cuonzo. Said that expectations are all over the board from a national perspective, and that he had seen some projected brackets that completely left MU out. He disagrees and is truly looking forward to hoops season.

Blair likes the job Jim Sterk is doing at Mizzou. Great hire in Cuonzo, he said. Said that an AD getting it right on 50% of his major hires is about what to expect. Pointed out that Sterk didn’t make a good hire at Washington State in football coach Paul Wulff, who was fired after four years and nine wins.

Blair will only get to see about 5-6 college football games this year (he was in Columbia Saturday). He reports on all Chiefs games now, home and road. Said the Chiefs now have difference makers at RB, TE and WR. Thought the Eagles game was a “let-down” opportunity, but now – if the team can keep from losing a starter per week – this could be a fun ride.

Like everyone else, he didn’t foresee the firing of John Dorsey as Chiefs GM. Thinks it came down to how much John thought he was worth vs. how much Clark Hunt thought. Thinks that Brett Veach has done a good job so far and Blair thinks that Brett had a lot to do with the early scouting and eventual trade and selection of Patrick Mahomes in the draft.

Ryan Walters Via Phone
Co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach Ryan Walters began the program with an update via phone from Columbia.

Howard Richards Is Next
Next week, Howard Richards -- MU Assistant Athletic Director - Community Relations and radio analyst for the Tiger Radio Network -- makes his first visit to speak to the Club. The Club meets on Tuesdays at Westport Flea Market Bar and Grill. Lunch is served at 11:30 am with the program beginning at Noon.
