FOOTBALL CFP - Four "most deserving" or "best" teams?

Where do you stand on this issue and why?

I tend to lean towards having the goal be the four best teams because I'm not really sure how you define whether a team "deserves" to be in a playoff when there aren't set requirements to make it.
