I'm not going to try to change anyone's mind about tonight. You can't lose this game. Not in year one, not in year four, not in year nine, whatever. You can't lose it. They did. It's horrendous.
Before I get into some individual player thoughts and such, let me say Barry Odom is not getting fired this week and I find it very, very, very unlikely he's getting fired this year. You can yell for it and you can think it should happen. I highly doubt it will.
*I was impressed with Kelly Bryant. More than I expected to be after camp. He looked good throwing the ball. I'd like to see some more designed runs and I think he holds on to the ball too long and it's going to catch up with him against faster defenses, but he looked good minus one terrible throw. I also thought he decided where he was throwing the fourth down pass before he threw it and it never had a chance.
*The receivers didn't catch a lot. Kam Scott had a killer drop, so did Johnathan Nance. There were two deep balls to Barrett Banister and Jalen Knox that were perfect throws. They'd have been very tough catches, but sometimes you have to make one to help your guy out and Missouri didn't. I've thought all along people were overselling this group some. Not that they're bad, just decent. I don't think Missouri has a gamebreaker (if they have one it's Scott). They have a lot of solid receivers.
*I can buy that Tyler Badie gives you a better chance in the two minute drill and Mizzou was basically in the two minute drill most of the second half, but if this team is going to do anything, Larry Rountree is going to have to be a big part of it. He was not tonight. He doesn't seem like the type of kid who will pout or anything, but I think he needs a lot of touches next week.
*Daniel Parker is the best tight end Missouri has. Not just the best blocking tight end. I think he's the best one overall. Yeah, you give up some athleticism and some of the flashiness, but I think the trade is worth what you gain.
*I don't know if the pass defense is better than it was last year. Tonight wasn't going to tell us that. I know the run defense is worse. There may come a time when Nick Bolton is everything Terez Hall was. That time isn't here yet. And this wasn't Cale Garrett's best game.
*Paging anyone who can play defensive end. Missouri had three of them out there tonight. None of them were noticeable. I don't think it's going to be fun for Jatorian Hansford to watch that film. Truthfully, the only D-lineman I noticed at all was Jordan Elliott.
Haven't read most of the board. Gonna let you guys vent. It's understandable. We'll have some more stuff in the morning, including a column that might satiate a few of you who think I'm way too easy on Odom.
