This was a weird game. For the last two quarters, we barely paid attention. First, the game was over. Second, the story was whether the QB was going to be able to play again.
It seems like everyone is optimistic he will be able to play again and maybe even pretty soon. My column tomorrow basically says it shouldn't matter for the next three weeks, but for this season to be what it can be, they're going to need him back by November.
This defense is ridiculous right now. Over the last four games, it has outscored opposing offenses 35-31. Tomorrow morning, it will be in the top 20 against the run, against the pass, in scoring defense and in total defense. Cale Garrett and Nick Bolton are the best pair of linebackers Missouri has had in a while. Kobie Whiteside has five sacks in five games. And Ryan Walters is pushing all the right buttons. More than anything, this defense is HITTING. They're decapitating somebody a couple times a game. It took a while, but Missouri has an elite defense. When every team you play looks like crap on offense, eventually that has to be about your defense. I'm ready to say it's about Missouri's defense.
Missouri took care of business again. After the West Virginia game, someone in the AD said to me, "In a few weeks, we're going to be asking how the f--- this team lost to Wyoming." I'm about there. I don't know how they did. If they hadn't, I don't know if they'd be as good as they are right now. But they handled that the right way and they've turned it on. I think that game serves them well over the next three because they damn well should know that they're not good enough to just roll their helmets out and win. They have to show up. If they do, they'll be 7-1.
