First, a caveat: This is premature. Very, actually. But if we're acknowledging this is a make-or-break season for Kim, then it's potentially handy to have an early list of coaches to keep tabs on.

I did hot boards last spring. That's not what I'm doing now. I'm not putting up Power Five coaches. Nor am I listing retreads -- i.e. guys like Steve Lavin -- sitting out right now. Finally, there won't be detailed dossiers on them. This is just a list of dudes I'll occasionally check on once the season tips off.
  • Kelvin Sampson, Houston
  • Chris Holtmann, Butler
  • Gregg Marshall, Wichita State
  • Ben Jacobson, UNI
  • Dan Muller, Illinois State
  • Archie Miller, Dayton
  • Will Wade, VCU
  • Dan Hurley, Rhode Island
  • Kevin Keatts, UNC-Wilmington
  • Mark Montgomery, Northern Illinois
  • King Rice, Monmouth
  • Jimmy Patsos, Siena
  • Matt McCall, Chattanooga
  • Kermit Davis, Middle Tennessee
  • Mitch Henderson, Princeton
  • Russell Turner, UC-Irvine
  • Rodney Terry, Fresno State
There are some usual suspects -- Miller, Marshall, Jacobson and Sampson -- but I'm not terribly psyched about the list. Holtmann probably isn't leaving Butler, but might as well call. Wade reupped with a new deal last spring. And it's kind of put up or shut up for Hurley at URI. There's no Bryce Drew or Brad Underwood sitting out there, either.

Good luck to Jim Sterk if he has to make a change. I don't see a situation where a guy like Mick Cronin decides to poke around and investigate another job. Sterk inherited Fisher out at SDSU, so he's seen how a coach that had run-ins with the NCAA can rehab his career. Maybe that's a boon for Sampson. Still, it'll be interesting to see which coaches emerge this season.
