Sterk says when he came to Mizzou in 2016 summer, they immediately suspended Yolanda, hired outside counsel, dug into all the records of the students she worked with. Attended a hearing last summer and have been waiting for the report since. Investigation found it to be an independent incident, once they reported, they cooperated with the NCAA. "I certainly don't think these penalties are reflective of what we expected."
Says the appeal process will be lengthy and it could last "Months"
Sterk says if the appeal process in ongoing they don't know for sure what will happen with postseasons, but believes the penalties are on hold during the appeal. "I don't think it would be finished before" baseball and softball postseasons.
Asked if the result changes the way Mizzou will handle things in the future he
I asked Sterk if this sends a message not to cooperate with the NCAA: "I think that's a sad day if that's the world we live in but I believe in doing things the right way and we're going to continue to do things the right way. I think it has to be corrected on the other side so that it doesn't impact people in that way."
Says they already have people working on the appeal
"I was shocked and dismayed by the penalties"
I asked Sterk if he was surprised there were recruiting penalties because the violations weren't in recruiting and if that would be part of their appeal: "Great point and, yes, surprised."
Sterk praises the compliance staff for their work in the investigation
Sterk is asked how the postseason bans sit with the NCAA's idea of not punishing student athletes who didn't have anything to do with the violations. His answer was very succinct: "Great question."
Sterk says he expects Missouri to win the appeal
Mizzou has hired outside counsel. They have hired Mike Glaser, who has worked with Mizzou in the past. Glaser is based out of KC
