Though Cuonzo Martin has made several appearances in Kansas City since being named Mizzou’s head basketball coach on March 20, 2017, today marked his first appearance at the weekly Tiger Club of KC luncheon. He joined the conversation at the Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill before a large crowd of enthusiastic Tiger fans.

Coach Martin was born in St. Louis and reared in East St. Louis, IL. He played collegiately at Purdue (1991-95) and then for four years in the NBA and Italy (1995-98). In 2000, he returned to Purdue as an assistant for Gene Keady. In 2008, he became the head coach at Missouri State, then moved on to Tennessee and California. Last season, Martin’s first at Mizzou, the Tigers went 20-13, tied for 4th place in the tough SEC, and made the NCAA tournament.

Highly regarded in the profession, Martin is one of two coaches on the 17-member NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee. He has also coached with USA Basketball, serving on the USA Junior National Team staff in 2011.

The Tiger Club of KC meets every Tuesday at the Westport Flea Market Bar and Grill. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at Noon. Our scheduled speaker on Tuesday, October 16 is Mike DeCourcy, college hoops writer for the Sporting News.
