Later today, I'll have a stock report on every 2016 signee where we'll break down who we think is going to play, who we think is going to redshirt and who's on the fence.
Here, we'll start with some info we have heard coming out of Mizzou's scrimmage:
The two players we heard the most about when we asked yesterday were running back Alex Ross and wide receiver Dimetrios Mason. Those guys seemed to "flash" to use the words of Barry Odom and DeMontie Cross.
Plenty of buzz about Marvin Zanders lately. As we've written multiple times, he's going to see the field. We're still confident Drew Lock is the starter, but how Zanders is used will be one of the most interesting things to watch in the first couple of games.
There was a lot of talk about the offensive line the last couple of days being tougher than a year ago. Players and coaches said they're more competitive. To be fair, some of those answers came to a question "Is the offensive line taking it to the defense more than last year?" It's a little bit of a leading question. And even if they weren't, most guys are going to tell us they are. It would be rare for someone to answer that question with "No, we're still pretty much dominating them." It may be 100% true that the OL is tougher and better than a year ago. But we're going to reserve judgment on that one for a while.
The other major question mark is receiver. It seems to be a foregone conclusion J'Mon Moore is one of the starters. Josh Heupel really stressed how Moore has matured on and off the field in the last few months. Chris Black certainly seems to be in line for a spot and he returned to practice yesterday. (Black and Moore are roommates, by the way). If Black starts, it would probably mean Mason is his backup because I think they're both more slot guys than outside guys. That still leaves one spot up for grabs. We'll still put our money on Keyon Dilosa for the time being, but we wouldn't be incredibly confident doing so at this point in time.
Defensively, a couple of guys told us Charles Harris was the major force on Saturday, which is no surprise. When we talked to DeMontie Cross after practice he told us Joey Burkett was probably the most consistent of all of Mizzou's linebackers so far. One of the real camp battles is between Burkett and Terez Hall at outside linebacker. Both are going to play, but based on what we're hearing right now, we'd think Burkett has the edge to start against West Virginia.
The other defensive battle is at cornerback opposite Aarion Penton. Penton told us with TJ Warren out, John Gibson is getting most of the first team reps. Cross said Gibson and Logan Cheadle are both playing well. Not sure how long Warren will be out, but that group seems to be Mizzou's top four corners right now. That would leave Anthony Hines and possibly Christian Holmes competing for playing time to be the fifth guy (if Mizzou plays five, which is a good number generally to have available...our guess at this point would be Hines because you don't burn a redshirt to be the fifth corner, unless Holmes can be a big help on special teams too).
We're going to wait a week or so before we project a depth chart, but you can start to get an idea of who we think is going to get the nod at most places on the field. The only question marks for me right now are these:
Tight End
Third Receiver
Left Guard
Outside Linebacker
Cornerback
That's five spots out of 24. The other 19, I'm pretty confident I could tell you the starters.
