I think what's going on with MPJ is pretty clear at this point. We're getting a lot of conflicting reports because there are two distinct sides to this story with different interests in mind. And in the middle you have a kid in a situation that really could reasonably go either way.
I think on one side you have the people who want to be cautious. They're the ones who are going to point out that there's a chance that if he comes back then he'll re-injure it, and there are millions of dollars at stake, etc. In that camp you have his parents, and apparently Mike Kelley and Jon Sundvold have decided to be spokespeople for this side of it as well.
On the other side are the people who want him to play if he is able to. They see him playing at the rec center, dunking in the pregame in Oxford, etc, and saying "hey, he looks like he's about ready, why not?" In this group you've got the fans, social media followers, and seemingly MPJ himself. There are people with sources from this side like Mizzou Man, GovernorPinkel, and others I've read here and elsewhere who are getting that side of the story
So there's a conflict there, and he's healthy (and hurt) enough to where either path is arguably the correct path.
And of course there's a ton of interest so everybody's talking about it. And you have people like Jeremy B. Numbahs, who is on the one hand sadistically inclined to lie and troll and stir people up at every opportunity, and on the other is doggedly committed to the superstition of the "reverse jinx", so he's going to chime in on every conversation with fake news.
But now we have Cuonzo finally weighing in, ever so cautiously, on the "he's gonna play" side of it. Now, he's making sure to give lip service to both sides of the issue, and of course it's totally in his interest for MPJ to play, but I think it's telling.
I've long been saying I think he's going to play somewhere between 5 and 10 games this year. I still think that's true. I think he comes back in the next 1 to 2 weeks. We'll find out soon, won't have to guess much longer.
