Defensive issues, Offensive issues

Just my thoughts after viewing the Mo State video a dozen times and looking at specific players and plays. The easy stuff first. Our offensive pass patterns seem pretty limited with no flag patterns and no deep ins. Lots of fly patterns or go routes and lots of bubble screens and skinny posts. We did see the tight end drag across the middle a couple of times. Really not much to complain about because everything worked but when the competition gets tougher we need a bigger mix. Play action with a deep in route front of the safety is a great weapon especially when you have gone deep on them. It takes timing and hard for a college team with limited practice time to develop. Faking the post or skinny post and breaking out to the flag will generally always get single coverage. We may pull out RB screens or other plays we don't see a lot. Mix it up and keep them guessing.

On defense we have to improve our DL play and be more disruptive. Barry Odom is persisting with his read and react dense. Terry Becker generally did not play well against MO State and we need him to penetrate and disrupt. All of our other DL players were better that TB so probably a matter of getting confidence back with his knee. Maybe Barry will turn them loose. Our secondary for the most part played with no discipline or accountability and we must have that to have any chance against South Carolina. Mo State faked a bubble screen and 3 defenders come up to stop it and the WR goes untouched in the secondary and is wide open. If that is the kind of assignment discipline we play with this Saturday South Carolina they will be the team with over 70 points. It takes trusting your fellow players to do their part and you do yours but we can't have 3 secondary players trying to stop a play that doesn't happen. Gap integrity is important in the stopping the run game but being disruptive and unpredictable on the DL is every bit as important. Lets hope Mr Beckner and crew wreck havoc on the South Carolina OL.
