“They’re certainly innocent until proven guilty. But having the FBI involved and not the NCAA is a different story. These are criminal charges. And what breaks my heart — there’s a cespool that’s existing in college basketball and at the scholastic level.” Dick Vitale

I am tired of people like DV who have been so involved with NCAA sports at so many levels that they had to know what was going on acting like they are shocked. The crocodile tears they shed now are because people got caught and the product has been tarnished. If they truly love NCAA sports they would have spoken up and tried to help find a solution... not speaking out about it makes them complicit. (kind of like when you know your best friends wife is sleeping around and you don't tell him because he wont hang out with you anymore)
That said, the only way the NCAA is going to fix what ails them is by figuring out what they want to be. Do they want a level playing field where amateurism is celebrated? Then be prepared for a downsizing of most sports. Do they want to be the training ground for future professional and Olympic athletes? Then they need to open up the rules for accepting gifts and other money. Do they want to be semi-pro? Then get ready to pay the players at all levels.
No matter what happens, the NCAA needs to take a look at the mess they have created, and the disparity in enforcement, and fix the ship before it goes under.
But then again, what do I know...
