Did Steckel leave 1 year too early?

Just thinking out loud... But does anyone think that Steck would be the current HC if he hadnt left for MO St? The last time our D was any good was when Steck was in charge and I believe our D would be in MUCH better shape right now if he had been HC post Pinkel. Thoughts? Am I way off base here?
