Impressed with how consistent the guys were during camp. Impressed with their attitudes and efforts.
There was a good back-and-forth between offense and defense throughout camp.
Mindset is going to change now that they have an actual opponent. Fall camp is very mundane with a lot of installation. There's an excitement of playing someone new.
The challenge for their opponent is that they have so many unknowns.
Thinks bringing in Kirby Moore and giving up playcalling was about embracing his role as head coach.
STP mindset began last year when they knew they had a talented roster but didn't have the results to show for it. There are still a lot to improve.
One of main challenges for coaches is to challenge players to grow and then monitor the growth. Logan Reicher was 376 pounds last year he's 344 now and is "one of the fastest and most explosive" offensive linemen on the team.
Doesn't know if they have tangible proof if they're good or not. They will find out when they play. You are what your record says you are.
Last year can give you belief in your process but you have to duplicate that process every year.
Had more live reps than any fall camp. More reps than any other fall camp they've had. This is the hardest camp that they've ever had.
Expectations are external. Internally they talk about standards (practice, core values, goals they want to accomplish). Feel the team worked hard to meet those standards during camp. The challenge is are you as good as you'll ever be and the answer is no. You have to be able to look at yourself and say I'm not a finished product.
There were a lot of penalties in fall camp. They have to be more consistent defensively. Red zone issues are something they're still working on.
More proud of Luther Burden's personal growth. He's surrounded himself with a good team that has helped him operate on a higher level in nutrition, school work, off-the-field habits and in the game. He's Mizzou-centered. He just wants Mizzou to be great even if it isn't all because of him.
STL to Mizzou pipeline has been better and on top of the team success has been able to help them recruit outside of that.
Johnny Walker has taken a defensive leader role. Obviously, he's one of 3 defensive team captains (Hicks and K. Williams). Walker has been pulling Williams Nwaneri aside and try to be a mentor to him. He's been pulling newcomers along and telling them how things work here.
Marvin Burks is more comfortable in what he's asked to do and has anchored down on what boundary safety is. The team has a lot of guys who can play so that allows the best players to play on special teams and allowed the best players to line up on defense. They want to be fresh on special teams.
Safety position has the most experience. The CB is where the questions lie.
Whit Hafer and Jude James did a great job of maximizing reps. he doesn't know if they will avoid the redshirt but they did well in fall camp when Norleet and Harris were out.
Darris Smith was having an outstanding camp. Smith is disappointed but not devastated. He's still around at team meetings.
Team doesn't need another Darris Smith they need to be the best version of themselves.
DE room is deep.
Brady has always been a leader and he commands respect. Cook is now a 3x team captain. He's been consistent in how he approaches his work. Wease is just very mature and gets the best out of people.
Defensively, they're replacing great players and coaches. To uphold Death Row, the players have to carry that out. Hicks, Williams and Walker know the standard and live by that standard.
Speedy Johnson is a gifted football player and talent. His challenge is be consistently off the field. He has great energy but he needs to have that every day. His last 7 days have been most consistent. It's easy to be a guy who flashes when no one expects you to do much. They need to be consistent all the time.
Brett Norfleet just needs to get his foot healthy. That's his next step.
They know their special teams starters have been announced but they haven't told the players. They will reveal them on Sunday.
Brady Cook's accuracy has been good. His decision-making has gotten better as camp progressed. He didn't turn the ball over during any of the scrimmages.
Gets a sense that the community and the state as a whole is excited about the football team. It hasn't been like that before. But the challenge is selling out the first game. If they don't sell out the first game they're not where they want to be as a fan base. Don't wait for select games. Be a 1-0 fan base. The game vs. Murray State is the most important game and he thinks fans need to show that this is a serious team is. This is a top-12 team in the country.
