Back home from Day 1 coverage of the Elite 11, where the start was delayed three hours because of thunderstorms in the area. So, that made for a very long night.
Here are my takeaways on Mizzou QB commit Tyler Macon:
- As I mentioned earlier today, Macon measured in at 6-foot and 205-pounds. He is the second shortest competitor in the field, the shortest being Auburn commit Dematrius Davis, Jr. He is also the eighth heaviest among the 20 competitors which is a positive, he definitely has some bulk to his overall frame.
- Overall, I think Macon had a very solid day. He showed off his athleticism in drills, particularly in situational throws where he was rolling out of the pocket. He also showed some the arm strength he's known for.
- A lot of today's drills were tailored towards fundamentals, red zone situations, quick release throws, footwork, along with some deeper throws that were around 20-30 yards downfield.
- Macon particularly excelled in the drills where they focused on deeper throws. He did have some overthrows, especially at the beginning on sideline go routes but he settled down and was more accurate on deep slant routes in the middle of the field and impressed in scramble situations.
- Some intangible stuff I picked up from watching Macon throughout the day. He really took the coaching and teaching well from the staff, motivated the other QB's in his group, and seemed to really be having fun and enjoying himself out there.
- At the end of the day, former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer issued a Rail Shot Challenge to all the quarterbacks there, including the camp counselors that included the likes of Ohio State's Justin Fields and Mississippi State's KJ Costello. The challenge was pretty much throw a perfect pass to the receiver running a sideline go route - hit him in stride or lead him towards the endzone. If you caused the receiver to stop his stride or move inside.
Macon threw a dart on his first attempt and earned a lot of praise from Dilfer as he advanced to the next round. Macon's second attempt was off and got him eliminated as Maddox Kopp went on to win the challenge to end the first day of action.
- It will be interesting to see what unfolds during day two on Tuesday. That will probably be a real indicator on if Macon will be a contender in this year's competition.
