The Chamber makes its first appearance since the National Signing Day 2016, officially turning its gaze (for the most part) to the Class of 2017. Consider this more of a "Setting the Stage" piece, as it's so (relatively) early in the 2017 class that, frankly, not a ton is known.
As always, the Chamber is premium information for PowerMizzou.com subscribers only, so please -- please -- keep discussion of these topics limited to the Tigers' Lair. Away we go!
For anyone who hasn't seen it mentioned before, we at PowerMizzou.com thinks the 2016 class could still see a couple more additions. The signing of Long Beach (Calif.) City College quarterback Jack Lowary should not have been much of a surprise to anyone reading this. The quarterback position was in serious need of bodies. Especially for the spring.
As we reported yesterday, Missouri will not sign Marvin Terry, and we don't believe anyone else will until his situation gets ironed out.
Offensive line, running back, defensive line and safety are positions that could still see some turnover. Tyler Catalina is still a possibility on the offensive line. Penn State transfer Akeel Lynch was a name we were hearing as a possible running back target, but he is heading to Nevada.
Other serious targets have not emerged yet, but we continue to track all possibilities. Position changes could be an option as well.
The Missouri coaching staff is already working hard on the 2017 class. Since Odom and his staff took over they have extended at least eleven offers to just offensive players. Nine of those were to offensive lineman.
A quick look at the scholarship breakdown shows that Mizzou only has 12 seniors for 2016. 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 OL, 3 DL, 2 LB, 2 CB and 1 LS. Charles Harris will be a strong candidate to leave early after his junior season so that could be 13 departures with four coming on the defensive line.
It's never a one-for-one replacement, but it does give a good idea about what kind of class Mizzou is looking at. PowerMizzou.com is predicting a class around 17 at this point that will be heavy on defensive players. The Tigers have one commit for 2017 commit (DaRon Davis) so there are about 16 guys left to add.
Mizzou's Junior Day is set for February 27. The Tiger coaches will be working to get all the top local prospects in Columbia for the day.
Speaking of top local prospects, here is a look at the PowerMizzou.com 2017 Missouri Top Fifteen.
1. Chester Graves - DE - Kansas City (Mo.) Park Hill - Height: 6'4" Weight: 220
A very athletic defensive end, Graves can make all the plays from defensive end. He is starting to get a lot of national interest, but Mizzou has made him a top priority. Graves would be a great player to come in right as Charles Harris departs. Has Mizzou offer.
2. Larry Boyd - OL - St. Louis (Mo.) Trinity Catholic - Height: 6'5" Weight: 320
A mauler on the offensive line, Boyd projects to the interior of the offensive line most likely. The new staff has already checked in with Boyd and let him know how much of a priority he is. Has Mizzou offer. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
3. DaRon Davis - WR - Kansas City (Mo.) Hogan Prep - Height: 6'2" Weight: 190
Mizzou's lone 2017 commit is an exceptional athlete. Plays running back in high school, but the old staff projected him as a wide receiver. Will be interesting to see if the new staff agrees. Has Mizzou offer, committed. Planning to attend Mizzou Junior Day.
4. Jaevon McQuitty - WR - Columbia (Mo.) Battle - Height: 6'2" Weight: 190
Probably the most divisive recruit in the state right now. Mizzou fans have wanted the Tigers to offer McQuitty for a while, but the old staff and the new staff have held off. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
5. Andrew Clair - RB - St. Louis (Mo.) University High - Height: 5'9" Weight: 170
It will be very interesting to see if the new staff looks past Clair's size. The old staff had no problem taking smaller running backs, but it sounds like Odom and his coaches will gravitate towards bigger backs. There is no denying Clair's talent though. He has great quickness and balance. He also has very good speed. Planning to attend Mizzou Junior Day.
6. Marquis Hayes - OL - Maryland Heights (Mo.) Pattonville - Height: 6'5" Weight: 315
Hayes just picked up his Mizzou offer on Wednesday. PowerMizzou.com caught up with him and it sounds like the Tigers are in a good position early. Hayes projects as an interior lineman. Has Mizzou offer. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
7. Reggie Crawford - WR - St. Louis (Mo.) Chaminade - Height: 6'2" Weight: 187
Plays taller than his listed 6'2". Crawford is also a very good basketball player and is a dangerous target when he gets a chance to go up and make a play on the ball. If he decides to turn all his focus to football he will develop into a very good receiver.
8. Thomas Dutton - TE - Columbia (Mo.) Hickman - Height: 6'7" Weight: 225
Huge target is a very tough player to defend. Dutton can go up and get the ball and shows surprising athleticism for his size. Planning to attend Mizzou Junior Day.
9. Dayon Moore - DB - Hayti (Mo.) - Height: 6'1" 195
A relative of the great William Moore, Dayon has flown under the radar due to geography. He jumps off the film though. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
10. Shane Clenin - OL - Festus (Mo.) Jefferson - Height: 6'6" Weight: 272
Tall and lean tackle prospect has solid athleticism. Will need to increase size and strength. Has frame to do both.
11. Aqeel Glass - QB - St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North - Height: 6'5" Weight: 234
Burst on to the scene with a very good junior season. Glass is receiving interest from Iowa, Iowa State and Oklahoma State and has already scheduled some throwing sessions with schools for the spring. Big QB can really throw the ball and will likely fit best in a pro-style offense. Will be interesting to see if Mizzou recruits him. They haven't up to this point.
12. Peyton Jones - DB - Kansas City (Mo.) Archbishop O'Hara - Height: 6' Weight: 175
After a strong performance at the Army All-American Game combine Jones has seen his profile grow. A defensive back with good size and athleticism. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
13. Anthony Payne - DL - Peculiar (Mo.) Ray-Pec - Height: 6'2" Weight: 255
A workout warrior who really impresses when it comes to 1-on-1 drills. Has good strength and explosiveness. Height will likely be an issue for some schools. Could run into same issues in recruiting that Jerrion Nelson did. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
14. Tanner Taula - TE - Blue Springs (Mo.) - Height: 6'6" Weight: 210
Big target can make plays in traffic. Taula runs good routes and shows good hands. Needs to get stronger and tighten up his route running.
15. Ryan Newton - LB - St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North - Height: 6'3" Weight: 225
Tough and physical linebacker. Newton is a good athlete and very solid with his fundamentals. Attending Mizzou Junior Day.
More to watch: Chance May | Israel Smith | Eli Ross | Quinton Lee | Jamarion Johnson | Mitchell Batschelett
One thing everyone can always count on is that more prospects will emerge as well. Keep in mind that any state rankings are a moving target, and more prospects will step up throughout the spring, summer and the fall.
