You may not know him but you know his place. Since the Post Dispatch has its premium site, I am posting posting the story in its entirety;
"...A prominent Metro East tavern owner died Wednesday, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said
Edward R. Sholar Sr. — widely known in the St. Louis area as "Fast Eddie" Sholar — was found dead at his home in the 900 block of Hop Hollow Drive in Alton. He was 61.
In 1981, Sholar bought the Bon-Air tavern at 1530 East Fourth St. in Alton from the Balaco family and added his nickname to the establishment. In recent years, he turned the operation of the tavern over to his son, Edward Sholar Jr.
Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn reports that about 10:45 a.m., Edward Sholar Jr. went to his father's home and found his body. He called authorities, who pronounced the elder Sholar dead about 11:55 a.m.
Authorities report that the victim died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and that a weapon was discovered in his hand. There were no signs of a struggle or other violence in the house.
The Alton Police Department also participated in the investigation.
Investigators said they found written instructions for funeral arrangements at the Hop Hollow residence.
Family members told authorities that the elder Sholar had recently become dispirited by declining health and chronic medical issues.
Arrangements are pending at Gent Funeral Home of Alton...."
A great place after a round of East Side golf, with buddies. Everybody was happy there; save one it appears.
I have been told Fast Eddies sells (or did at one time) more AB product than any single bar in the US
