COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou All-American Mikel Schreuders has secured his spot in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, becoming the Tigers’ first two-time Olympic swimmer.
Schreuders, Aruba’s lone Olympian in the sport of swimming for the Paris Games, turned in qualifying times of 21.93 in the 50-meter freestyle and 48.46 in the 100-meter freestyle. The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be contested, July 26-August 11, with swimming competition set to take place at Paris La Defense Arena.
The Oranjestad, Aruba native is the second former MU swimmer to qualify for this summer’s Paris Games, joining France’s Clement Secchi (100 fly). Schreuders, who competed in the 200-meter freestyle in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, finishing 45th in Rio. Along with Secchi, Schreuders helps extend a recent streak that has seen the Tigers’ men’s and women’s swimming and diving program produce at least one Olympic qualifier in each of the last three summer games, dating back to the 2016 Rio Games. The duo joins Mack Darragh (2016), Dominique Bouchard (2016) and Fabian Schwingenschloegl (2021) on Mizzou’s elite list of Olympians.
A 13-time All-America honoree during his four-year career at Mizzou (2016-19), Schreuders claimed the Tigers’ first-ever individual Southeastern Conference title with his win in the 200-meter freestyle (1:31.27) in 2019. He went on to finish eighth at the NCAA Championships to secure first-team All-America laurels. Schreuders also swam on Mizzou’s 400-meter medley relay team that won the SEC crown and helped the Tigers to three top 25 team finishes at NCAA meets (2016, 2018 and 2019) during his career.
