I am actually feeling good about the coaching search.
There are some very talented guys who have been discussed. And there has been almost no leaks. This (to me at least) shows a very tightly controlled process.
A lot of these potential coaches have games THIS weekend. If that is the case, they wouldn't want their candidacy announced prior to the game.
Couple of quick comments:
McElwain is a home run hire. Won the SEC East in his only 2 complete seasons at Florida. Fired after going 3-4 the next year. 1 of these losses was a 1 point loss to LSU and the other was a 2 point loss to Texas A + M. Was terminated after the Georgia game, which was a blowout.
No idea if we can get him, but if we can--that's a great hire.
Monken and Calhoun. Great success at Army and Air Force. If you can win there, it shows you have the ability to win elsewhere. Some of y'all are looking at the offensive systems and immediately thinking---no way. Won't work here. That type of offense can really work...if it is mixed in with other elements as well. The blocking schemes and the misdirection plays can be almost impossible to stop if each player on defense does not play assignment football. I can guarantee you that there would be a more effective and disciplined running attack than we saw this year.
I remember the systems that Urban Meyer ran @ Bowling Green and Utah. If I remember correctly, they were great passing systems but with a heavy, heavy dose of option concepts. I seem to remember we had no chance stopping a kind of inverted option play where the QB looks like he's gonna run speed option and then actually tosses it forward on a misdirection play. Again and again it gouged us.
Then at Florida, Meyer ran all kinds of crazy stuff---and the option concepts were definitely a key part of the offensive attack.
For me at least, having coached youth football with an inferior and undersized line against teams with bigger and better linemen, we were able to hide our deficiencies with scheme. I just think that in the SEC, you cannot have ONLY the option concepts as your entire offense because the speed at linebacker and safety is off the charts.
Finally, I think the law of averages hold true here. We had wonderful coaches in Norm Stewart and Gary Pinkel. But, since these folks (with the exception of a couple years under Quin and Haith) we've had pretty average coaches.
I think that we are due for a big time hit. And I think our time will come.
There's no reason to have pure panic mode.
I think almost all of these guys have some great strengths. Who will be the guy?
This stuff isn't so darn frustrating like many of you seem to think.
I think it's exciting.
