One of the things I learned early in my career was to conduct "burglary patrol" during day shift while most people were at work and school. It simply involved driving around residential neighborhoods. We never really caught any burglars this way, but I always felt the public probably liked seeing us in their neighborhoods. As my career progressed, I found the number of residential burglaries we incurred depended almost solely on when the usual suspects were incarcerated or not.
