Canada passed a law saying that Google and Meta (and others) will have to pay traditional news outlets for displaying their stories on their platforms. On the one hand, I can understand this since a lot of the product gets viewed for free and those news companies are having a hard time surviving. But, the argument can be made that Meta and Google drive people to stories and outlets that they many would never have accessed, thus helping their business. Google and Meta have asked for modifications (which Trudeau has refused) some of which include only legitimate news gathering outlets getting reimbursed. Essentially, news aggregators would be cut out of the pay loop.
Many / most people get their news via the internet. Most do not pay for subscriptions and only read and watch what is free. If legitimate news is behind a paywall, or removed from the search engines, then many/most people will not know what is going on in the world, will be more influenced by influencers, and we will be a much poorer society for it. And yeah, I find that concerning.
