Gruden is just one of the many symptoms. We can all imagine the talks that go on behind NFL doors concerning race, political stances and orientations. As long as NFL and NFLPA cling to antiquated ideas based on fear, ignorance and outright hate, there will always be some embers of indifference that divides teams and ownership.
Gruden won't be the last person to be exposed. He was just the first to be sacrificed to appease those conducting the WFT misconduct investigation. You sacrifice a pawn as a mean to get around an obstacle. In this case, Gruden could have been used by both the NFL and Raiders (look at this record). The NFL had his emails and used them to take the heat off of Snider. The Raiders dumping Gruden now would save them $60 million from the remainder of his $100million dollar contract (22-31 record).
But getting back to the point, Gruden fear and dislike of what he doesn't know or understand is what drove him to write hateful gay comments (see article). For all of us who embraced Michael Sam, there are 10times that number who hate and loath him for something that is outside their realm of understanding. End the end, all these kids want to do is play . Whether it's football, baseball, basketball or any other sport, just let them play.
