I waited to post this, to let cooler heads prevail and reflection occur. It is difficult to see what the program has fallen to, after so many missteps under this regime.I would ask a classic question, a question that would be met with much rancor but still is just as valid today.
It has been 2.5 years now, and several Odom recruiting classes. What is his best win?
People didnt like it the first time I asked. Hell, people still dont. Recruiting woes, poor attendance, bowl game embarrassment, it is all baked into the cake.
I pretty much knew who Barrington was after Middle Tennessee State, a game that should have been a strong foreshadowing as to what was coming. Kentucky at home that same year was the game that prompted me to ask how long until we could flush Barrington.
Head Coaching experience/Many years of Coordinator success, Ace recruiter and an identity on Offense/Defense are paramount qualities that we need in our new head coach next year. The fact of the matter is that Odom leveraged an offer from Memphis into an opportunity in the premier conference. This is something that should never happen. I am sure he is a nice guy, but this is a guy that was a Coordinator at a P5 job for 1 season with no head coaching experience at all. This is something that should never happen.
We need to think better than this, we need to act better than this and we need to be better than this. I have a lot of faith in Jim Sterk, and I think he has been pining at his chance to put his stamp on the program. He, I am sure has a list of potential candidates as I have my own list as well that I will release at a later date. This may even be a good year to hire a coach based on competing openings.
It is nice to know that somebody knows what they are doing after all.
