I committed the unforgivable sin today and listened to KK's monologue... and his diatribe was basically the same blah blah blah Ortiz said in his article ( link below). Nobody outside of KC cares about this.... Mizzou fans outside of KC have moved on.... kU fans don't care... this is about Mizzou trying to be relevant in KC again... like I said.. blah blah blah...
Not surprising, I know. And that is not what I want to talk about... rather, I think I have found the problem so many people OUTSIDE the rivalry have in trying discuss this.
It's not about need. It is not about one team making the other better. It's not really about the all time head to head record. If it were about any of that nobody would care about this thing. It would be dead.
This is about something KSU and SLU and SMSU don't have... this is something people looking at $$$ or RPI or relevance or whatever will never understand.
This is about going out back, tonight, and kicking the living crap out of that smart ass next door. And then doing it again the next time you get a chance to meet. It's about getting the crap kicked out of you, and responding to the call next time they want to go at it again. This is about hate! (you know, the healthy, competitive kind.... even Holly Rowe said as much last night!)
Mizzou and kU hated each other through the toilet bowl era. KSU was only an afterthought.
Mizzou and kU hated each other when we were fighting for top spot in the nation.
Mizzou and kU hated each other when Mizzou was bottom of the barrel and kU was final 4.
Mizzou and kU hated each other when Mizzou owned kU.
Mizzou and kU hate each other now... We want a piece of them and they are sticking it to us by playing passive aggressive by denying us the chance. (That's you Mr Bill Self)
It's hate, (again... the healthy kind, ok?).. and the only safe space is outside of the rivalry!
It's not rational. It's not quantifiable (unless $1.75m raised in a week for an exhibition counts). It is a part of who you are... and if it is not, you wont get it. You will not understand. And any amount of analyzing will not help.
I sort of feel bad for KK, Ortiz and the others who don't get it... who don't see how special this is... and who don't have that special someone they want to play and beat anywhere, anytime... that someone who is YOUR rival, the one where the W or the L could make or break your season no matter the outcome of the whole. Somehow, having that "special someone" in your life... no matter the outcome... makes life all the more satisfying.
But then again... what do I know....
