Firing Cross now is a great move and a sign of progress to me. Everybody bitched and moaned about Cross making 600k and doing nothing for that chunk of change. He was unnecessary in my opinion. Throw into the mix that Cross was an issue with several recruits and I'm good with it.
Why drag our feet another season with lackluster results with a handicapped coordinator? I thought once his duties were relieved last season that he would be gone at the end of the year. I am not asking, "Why didn't this happen then?". It doesn't matter. Pinkey would have held steadfast for years on end given his unquestionable loyalty. I like the sign it shows that if there is a problem, it will get corrected even if it is a COACH and not just a player. That's a huge step in the right direction.
We don't know Cross' role over the past two weeks or at the end of last season. What we do know is many did not care for him nor the results he produced. If you move AJ up, good. Nice recruiter. If you get someone else, fine. What we know is this had to happen for Odom to feel comfortable putting it on his own shoulders. I prefer that.
I hope the team responds. I hope recruits respond positively. I like that Odom is trying something new. There should be nothing known as job security as a football coach knowing millions of dollars and a school's image are involved. Bravo Barry!
