You have to temper what I am about to say because it was only one scrimmage and for the most part he was scrimmaging with the 3's and 4's.
Also...for the record I have not studied tape...and I have not seen a lot of game film, practices, or any kind of performances other than his his hudl highlight film and today's scrimmage
This is just a first impression just watching him play one scrimmage...but my first thoughts were...WOW!
Just eyeballing the scrimmage...he looked like the best quarterback on the field...he was impressive...he really was.
He had such poise and pocket presence...his throws were all accurate and well timed...he seemed to have great field vision and was able to look off defenders and sure seemed to be going through progression reads to the naked eye.
He displayed a quick release...he threw ropes when he had to...and he threw with great touch on shorter and intermediate throws. He throws a very "catchable" ball.
He stood tall and showed great poise in the pocket...and when thing broke down he was very effective at scrambling (both to his right and left) while still keeping his eyes down field.
He threw really well on the run...twice throwing side arm darts UNDER the outstretched arms of defenders for completions.
When there was no where to throw or run...he made good decisions and scrambled out of bounds to live for the next play.
The guys certainly appeared to be a really cool customer...confident...under control...unflappable.
I am not saying that Drew Lock should be the starting quarterback right now...or even that he should definitely shed the red shirt.
Maty Mauk is 14-4 as a starter and has done some great things...and I think he definitely deserves to be the guy right now. He's proven he can play and win and I think he has matured a lot and is poised to have his best season.
Also...Printz did some good things and so did Zanders who is certainly an explosive runner when he tucks it and goes. We have some great depth at QB right now and that quite a luxury .
I know when you look at the depth chart it makes all the sense in the world to red shirt Lock...I GET that.
I am just saying that Drew Lock was VERY impressive...so impressive that I don't think it's a lock (pardon the pun) that he DOES red shirt. I think the Coaches have a tough decision to make.
I talked briefly with Andy Hill after the scrimmage and tried to get him to "bite" with some of his thoughts when I commented, "Boy...that #3 looked pretty good out there!"
But the wily veteran Coach would not bite and just half winked and answered dryly, "You are a great judge of talent my friend."
I readily admit that I wear black & gold glasses and tend to be overly optimistic at times...but my gut tells me that Drew Lock is going to be pretty special at Mizzou...whenever he hits the field.
