Defensive Linemen Drafted in 1st & 2nd Round in Last 5 Years (2013-17)

MIZZOU: 5
BIG XII (all 9.5 teams):
3

And of course that includes three 1st rounders for Mizzou vs. one for the Big 12. While it says something about Mizzou, I think it MOSTLY says something about the Big 12. Guessing their wide-open style of offensive play doesn't lend itself to development of D-linemen. And it's not like OU & Texas in particular haven't had good DL recruits.

And it really is JUST about the Big 12. There've been 76 DL (including pass rushing OLB) taken in 1st & 2nd round in last 5 years - so basically 15 a year. It breaks down roughly like this:
  • SEC: 33%
  • Big10/ACC/Pac12: ~17% each
  • G5: 10%
  • Independents (ND/BYU): 4%
  • Big 12: 4%
You can check my work here. And yes, is picking 1st two rounds in last 5 years slight cherry picking for MIzzou? Sure. But in terms of Big 12 it pretty much holds up however you slice it -- top 3 rounds, all 7 rounds, etc.

Unlike some here I don't wish Perkins & Thompson ill. I hope they have INDIVIDUAL success (despite OU descending into the John Blake years as a team) and go on to have productive NFL careers (edit: maybe not this part). But it will be interesting to see if they can overcome the Big 12s recent history of not producing a lot of "big boy football" d-lineman for the NFL.
