Coach K and Duke were one of the first teams to truly coach "the charge" in college basketball. In my mind, it has been the most negative change in the college game over the past 25 years. He coaches his players to get in a position and take a fall, FORCING the referee to make a call under the current set of rules.
Now, unfortunately, it's a part of the game, similar to taking dives in World Cup soccer. Because they do it so well they are perceived as getting the benefit of a bias in officiating. Personally, I think they do seem to benefit, but I think Coach K truly knows how to coach his players to GET those calls. I think it is more than just Duke bias. He's playing chess while the rest of us complain..
Yesterday's block call was a joke. It should have been a charge because, by the rules, the Duke player was in position to get the call.
Isn't it ironic that Duke end up losing their trip to the final four on a call they have learned to expect? They get the call nine of ten times, this just happened to be the one out of ten it didn't work.
