I imagine everyone on this board was looking forward to this game as much as I was. This was really going to be an opportunity to get closure on the move to the SEC. Beat Texas, flip them the double bird, and mic-drop walking out of the dome. Alas, it didn't happen and I feel like Scut Farcus got away with being a jerk again.
My first reaction to the horrible first half was to lash out at Odom. He's the head coach and the team wasn't as prepared as they should have been. I've never been a fan of hiring him and am still unsure of what he will do next year.
After sleeping on it I have decided I am going to give him a pass on last night's performance. First, this was his first bowl game as a head coach, so he was bound to make some mistakes. Second, this was basically a road game for Mizzou and our fans. There are tons of UT fans in Houston and this was as good a venue as they could have hoped, not so great for us.
Third, the defense played really, really well. Our defense was a train wreck, an absolute DISASTER half way through the season last year. They looked good against some great athletes last night. Odom gets credit.
Finally, the real problem with the coaching last night was the offensive game plan. If the commentators are accurate, Drew Lock had a lot to do with the game plan and our interim coach was coaching high school 4 years ago. We simply didn't have the experience and brain power to match what we were up against. That was not a fair fight.
Don't forget that Alabama's offense struggled last year when Kiffen left. Since Odom ran the defense, our offense WAS Heupel- he made the game plan, the preparation, and made the calls. All that was out the window.
My hope is simple: We get another good OC and next year Odom proves me completely wrong. I'm truly hopeful.
