I'm sure someone is streaming it. I'll update you here, post audio and a transcript and reaction after
Sterk met with Odom this morning to tell him of the decision.
"This decision was not an easy one, but necessary and supported by Chancellor Cartwright and President Choi."
Thanks Odom for his contributions. "As a program we had tremendous momentum heading into 2019...We lost a great deal of energy over the last half of the season which caused us great concern as we look to the future."
Says they have the resources to be successful at the highest level. "A national search is underway." Sterk will make no comments until the next football coach is hired.
"Did not make this move lightly"
"I felt we lost momentum of the program and it would be difficult to maintain going forward under his leadership."
Decision was made "in the last 24 to 48 hours."
Wants someone with energy and experience, quality individual that has had success in leading a program or as a coordinator at a high level. Head coaching experience is "not an absolute criteria but would be helpful"
Right now the assistants are employed and work for Mizzou until a head coach is hired.
Cartwright and Choi will be "consistently involved" in the search. Won't have a huge search committee. GOing to try to move quickly. Early signing period has changed the way you have to do things. Important that we move swiftly and hire the right person.
Sterk says Mizzou will "hopefully in the next week and a half to two weeks have a good idea who will be our head coach."
"We already have a lot of interest"
Informed the players and staff on a conference call because so many had gone home over Thanksgiving.
Says the finances and the recruiting restrictions are not an issue in looking for a new coach. Says that the AD gives the school more than $20 million a year. Cites the loan from the school that Cartwright talked about on Tuesday helping that.
Sterk says he expects the assistants to be retained or hired elsewhere which will mitigate the buyouts Missouri will owe.
Says Power FIve/SEC experience is "definitely a benefit."
I asked Sterk if he always had a list on hand: "You always have a few people that you know that might be interested, but obviously just in the last few weeks putting that to pencil and trying to decide what could we look for? Ultimately I had to be prepared either way, if Barry stayed which could have happened, but if we were going to look, I had to be prepared for that too."
Asked if he is open to someone who is out of coaching right now, Sterk makes a joke and never really answered.
Said attendance was a factor "but not the ultimate factor."
Sterk said people at other schools have asked him why Missouri hasn't been as successful as it should be. "That's why I'm here. That's why I get excited about Missouri football, basketball, all our sports."
Sterk said offense/defense depends on the candidate. Said people like scoring points, but references Rocky Long as a guy who thinks 17 points is a lot.
Says he will hire a search firm. Using Parker search firm, the same that was used for the search hiring Cuonzo Martin.
I asked Sterk if they can start to use the seven weeks of limited recruiting now. He said that's something they're in discussion with the NCAA about and is a possibility.
The last 5-7 minutes have just been people asking questions that have already been asked.
