Starts in about five minutes. Will pass along info.
Five areas of focus:
Student athlete experience
Personnel
Facilities
Resources (Money/Donations)
Political dynamics of institution
"Those keep me busy"
Wife is in San Diego, house for sale.
Job isn't overwhelming. "It's what I'm kind of used to I understand it...It's been fun, I've enjoyed it."
Not going to fill the Deputy AD role (Wren Baker), elevated Brian White to a lot of those duties. Sarah Reesman will be Chief of Staff (will run meetings etc when Sterk is out).
Immediate priorities: "A lot of great things going on, it's not like it's broken." Talking about the MizzouMade curriculum.
Meeting with all head coaches, senior AD personnel
Hopes to announce more gifts for south end zone project in coming weeks/months
“We’re receiving positive support. I think people can see what’s going on on the field and with Barry’s leadership. It’s not an endorsement of me, per se, I think it’s an endorsement of the program.”
SEZ: Infrastructure stuff needs to be done first. “97% sold out of east side premium seating” so will add some in SEZ. Not increase capacity, but make some of it premium seating. Weight room, medical training area, offices, meeting rooms, game day and practice locker room to be included.
Estimate of indoor facility about $24 million. Would be in addition to Devine, not a replacement.
SEZ project goes in front of Curators as informational item for October meeting.
Sterk looking at a football game in STL as a possibility with the Rams leaving.
Part of why he took this job: "I felt like I could come in and help."
Says it would be great if Hank Foley stays and "if he doesn't hopefully they'll hire someone even better."
Asked about the challenges of being at a place that is in bottom quarter or so of SEC in donations and revenue: "We really haven't been aggressive on the outbound sales side of things from a ticket standpoint..." Football program, very young, huge upside, "that we can get people excited about. They are excited, the people I've talked to."
On Kim Anderson: "Anyone that tells you're son they're guaranteed they're going to be there, they're full of crap..." (Talking about all coaches there, not Anderson specifically). Says Kim inherited a tough situation and you take that into account. "The past two years you kind of set that side. It's there, but I'm new, I can look with a fresh set of eyes of what's happening this year, what's going on and see where the program goes from here. It was an unfortunate situation that he inherited. I think he feels really good about the team that he has."
"I look at is there progress being made? What direction is the program going? Is it going up or is it going down? That's how you look in the end."
Sterk says he has met with recruits and parents in both football and basketball recently.
Top takeaway from the first 20 minutes: Sterk is a big fan of Barry Odom.
On non-con scheduling: My friend at Wyoming was worried I was going to cancel the game right away. Not going to change that right now. Probably wouldn't do it in the future.
On attendance last weekend: Down in season tickets, up in premium seating. "I think we have some work to do on the outbound ticket sales side." Says won't see any real benefit on that until next season. They're being more aggressive in that regard.
On people that cancelled after last year: "We won't give up on them."
On Earleywine: He's looked at what he needs to do and "I think from the department we're doing the same thing. Clean slate? No. But it's a fresh start for sure...Excited about moving forward with that."
Expect softball stadium ready for March, but obviously things can change.
"I have three daughters and I'm going to have to work till I'm 85...I haven't thought about retirement."
Said when he was at SDSU and everything happened last fall here he was aware of it, but he didn't get into how he would have handled it. "I can't say what I would do because I wasn't in that situation."
Said the staff at SDSU talked about the events, but it never reached the point of him talking to coaches there about how they would handle it because he considered it a unique situation.
Testified last week in the case with the women's basketball coach at SDSU. Said he would handle the situation the same way again as far as firing the coach. Doesn't really talk about the case.
Says there are differences between that and Earleywine. Said it didn't escalate to that level here.
Said Mizzou was aware of the lawsuit when they were in the hiring process.
On how he can support Anderson: "He's the coach until he's no longer the coach. Hopefully has a great long tenure here."
Turf for Simmons Field being targeted for 2018 season
Tim Hickman, Bryan Maggard are staying in AD in roles they previously held
Hearnes Center "is not blowing up in the near future"
Ideally indoor facility could be off south end of stadium, but also could be in location of current football practice fields (behind the MATC)
Sterk says he talked to Wren Baker before he left, hasn't talked to Mack, probably will at some point. Has met with Mike Alden.
On Pinkel's role: Uniquely qualified to help. Has talked to him about what the football program needed. Gary can help convey the message to donors of why they need some of these things.
Sterk said when he got to SDSU they had 56000 applications annually. Last year they had 84000 (top 10 number in the country).
